The first thing I saw when I walked into the church was Eleny's picture on the big screen. She was wearing a short purple dress, tan flats, and was standing in green grass in front of a pine tree. She had a big wide smile and these huge green eyes that were bright enough to light up the sky. I had no idea that she was this beautiful because I had always seen her at practice with her hair in a cap and with goggles on.
"How ya doing?" my lane mate Liam asked me as I took a seat next to him. I looked down the row to discover that the entire swim team showed up, even though some of the kids, including me, didn't know Eleny that well.
"I'm okay; been better," I replied. "It's just really sudden."
"I know, I just can't believe that she's gone," Liam responded to me in a voice so low that it could be a whisper.
We sat in silence as the funeral started. A pastor came up to the stage decorated with pink flowers and numerous candles.
"Today, we gather here to celebrate the life of Eleny. She lost her life too early, but she is in a better place in heaven now," the pastor told his audience. He then proceeded to talk about her spirituality, how close she was to God, and how her life was an example of faith and God's grace. Next, her parents came up.
"Eleny was a blessing from God," her mom said. "She was one of the kindest and most thoughtful people that you could ever know. She was a hard-worker and was determined to overcome things that were challenging for her. She had a passion for---"
That's when her mom lost it. She started sobbing and through her tears, she muttered, "music." Her dad continued the speech and said that she loved to see people smile and often put their needs in front of her own. After a few more minutes, her dad said that they love her and that a day won't pass in which they don't mourn her loss. They then left the stage.
Next, her best friend, Claire, came up. The first thing Claire said was, "Eleny would sure hate to see all of you so unhappy. Cheer up a little!"
This caused everyone to giggle, but also to cry again because it made them think of Eleny's sense of humor.
Claire proceded to say, "It's okay, I'll start crying soon too. Eleny was the best friend that I could ever have. We had different interests, but we just got each other. In our own weird way, we got each other and were like the same person. When we were together, we were truly ourselves. We always told each other that we were going to each other's maid of honors. We never got there--
Claire lost it and started sobbing. She finished up by croaking out that, "Eleny is in a better place. I love and miss you. Forever Eleny."
A couple more family members and close friends came up and then the funeral was over. I should've put in more effort. How did I miss Eleny? She swam next to me everyday for 2 hours and I probably only spoke to her about 3 times in the 2 years that I, "knew her."
I walked out of the church and headed towards my car. I jumped in the car and started driving home. I walked into the house, grabbed a donut, and decided to go on Instagram. I was sure that people were posting about Eleny's funeral and I wanted to see the memorial pictures. However, all the pictures that I was seeing said that they were from June 2015, which was about 4 months ago. Dumb sprint must have done work to their network and shut everything down, which would have screwed with my phone.
A little while later, my mom came home with groceries. I was taken aback when she didn't ask me about the funeral, so I told her how nice it was. She simply looked at me very worriedly.
"Honey, I don't know what you're talking about because Eleny is alive! You must have had a bad dream or something," she told me.
"Do you not remember when she got shot Mom?" in a seriously worried tone. Either she was going crazy or I was going crazy.
" No, Harry, I don't remember. I'm going to give you a glass of water and then you're going to take a nap. I think that you really need some rest." my mom replied back to me.
"But I saw her get shot Mom! I know it happened!!!" I yelled back furiously. How dare she question me when I saw someone die?
"She is not dead. I saw her mother this morning and she was telling me about how much Eleny was enjoying swim team. She is not dead."
I looked at her and remembered what date my phone had said. My phone said that it was June 2, 2015, which was 4 months before Eleny had "died." Sprint hadn't reset their system. I had either gone back in time or I was simply going mad.
