The clicking of the clock as the seconds passed by grew louder. Tick tock, tick tock. I sit on the cold hard floor of the jail cell, thinking how I ended up here. How did one mistake change my life forever?
It was August then, nice and warm with just the right amount of wind. The days were brighter, the nights were wilder and the fruit was sweeter. Summer, everyone's favorite season.
I walked home one pleasant morning from an unoccupied field. That was the morning I witnessed the most beautiful sunrise. My hands were jammed in the pockets of my faded blue jeans. My black sneakers scraped across the cement as I kicked the tiny rocks across the sidewalk. I walked alone, looking for anyone I knew to walk on by.
I realized that the only person I wanted there the most was David Todd, my older brother. David has a strong build and a tough character for a nineteen year old. He's  hard as nails, but he can be thoughtful and understanding. David has dark blonde hair that he keeps long at all times. His pale green eyes are what everyone likes the most about him. His eyes show he's caring and that he tries to understand everything.
A car pulled up by the sidewalk as I was walking. "Hey buddy, whatchu got in your pockets?" one passenger slurred. "I don't got a thing, I swear." My voice trembled. The group of five guys got out of the car, circling around me. "Don't go lying to us buddy." another one said pulling out a blade. "Just give us what you got in your pockets and we'll scram."
I took my hands out of my pockets, proving I didn't have anything on me whatsoever. "See, I told ya!" I shouted. One guy grabbed me by my white t-shirt and lifted me off the ground. "Listen pal, don't go getting wise here. Now you keep your mouth shut, or you get it." he threatened, putting the blade underneath my jaw, adding pressure. I felt the pain of the blade slicing across my skin. The guy threw me down and loud footsteps approached. I heard yelling and and objects being thrown. I opened my eyes to see David and the gang taking on the group of guys. David ran to my side. "Michael, you alright?" he said touching my cut. I winced," Yeah just don't touch it!" I slapped his hand away. "Crap, sorry Mikey."
"Hey Mikey, what were you doing walking all alone here anyways!" yelled Chris Matthews, walking towards us.
Chris is nineteen like David. But Chris is tougher than David. Chris isn't sweet like David either. In fact, he's the complete opposite of David. He has jet black hair which he keeps longer than David's. Chris' eyes are the darkest shade of brown and are filled with hatred. Life at home for Chris is rough. His parents fight all the time when his deadbeat father isn't belting him. Which is why Chris is always at our house, which isn't any better than theirs. Our dad left us when I was only three. Ten years later, our home life is still bad. Mom has been depressed since the day dad left us. She's always locked up in her room, always drunk and always crying. So it's up to David and me to take care of each other.
"I was walking home from the fields." I said. "What were you doin' in the fields, Mikey?" Chris sounded pissed. I figured I'd make up a lie because saying I was watching a sunrise would make me seem weak.
"I went for a walk that's all." I finally said. The rest of the gang caught up. "Crap Mikey, you okay?" Tom Hues asked.
Tom is fifteen and he's got a pretty tough build.  He has green eyes and dark brown hair which he keeps long, curled at his ears as it runs along the nape of his neck. Just like the rest of us, Tom's got some problems.  He's mental. He carries a heater with him at all times, sometimes loaded, sometimes not.  One time he pulled the heater out on the fuzz and ended up in the cooler for a couple of months.
"Yeah he's fine it's just a little gash."  Dan Curtis said angrily. Dan is seventeen and always pissed. Every little thing ticks him off. Dan and I never see eye to eye. He doesn't like me and I sure don't like him. His icy grey eyes are covered by pieces charcoal black hair laying on his forehead. Dan's got a decent build, but I have a better one according to David.
As the wind grew stronger, wisps of my dark black hair flew around. The wind became so strong that my crystal blue eyes began watering.
"Hey crybaby, you still scared?" Dan mocked. "Shut it will ya? The wind's blowing in my eyes." I replied.  "Will you two quit it?" David said. When David says something, we usually listen because no one wants to get on his bad side.
When we entered our home, mom walked out completely drunk. She began slurring many stupid things until Tom put her in a room. "Damn, there ain't a day when mom's sober." I said ashamed. I know we all have problems but realizing that most of my life my mom has been a depressed alcoholic just aggravates me.
"You guys want to do something tomorrow?" Chris asked out of the blue. "Can't, me and Dan are working late tomorrow." David announced. Dan and David have been good buddies since birth. Which is why they work together fixing cars.
"How 'bout you man?" Chris asked me. I never was close with Chris and I had nothing better to do. "Yeah why not." I finally said. "I'll come too. I ain't got a date tomorrow. Lisa was two timing me while I was in the cooler." Tom mentioned.  "Damn, guess we can't trust them girls anymore" Chris replied.
We all sat in the living room playing poker, enjoying life that night. I believed that my life was pretty good. But little did I know that my life would be forever changed.
