It was a hectic day. Especially since Marilyn wanted to see if she could run into someone famous after Jiyong had left. She was something alright. However, Katelynn acted as if she had already knew how she was, she didn't try to calm her down or burst her bubble that she wouldn't find anyone here. I, on the other hand, felt like a mother looking after a four year old boy who had sweets for lunch. I couldn't take my eyes off of her, even if I could I wouldn't. It was for the sake for anyone who Marilyn had 'preyed' upon.
"Just let her get tired, she'll get over it eventually." Katelynn said as she drank from a cup that contained orange juice in it. She said it so carelessly too, as if she herself wanted to see how this would go.
I just remained standing where I was, I sighed heavily and looked at her looking at the faces of Korean men wearing masks. Not long my phone had vibrated, I picked it up and answered the unknown caller. "Hello?"
"Hm. Oh! [f/n], is this you?" The masculine voice asked from the other end. I sighed heavily and looked at Marilyn.
"This is she, is this Jiyong?" I ask into the phone, already knowing my answer. Katelynn had noticed my agitated face and chuckled.
"Ding, ding!" He imitates a bell ringer, "how did you know?" He asks as his voice becomes low.
"I can only guess." I replied, "how did you get my number if I never gave it to you?" I ask growing concerned, was he stalking me again? Was I right about him before?
Then I saw a figure with red hair smile at me.
"Marilyn." Jiyong and I had said in unison, except our tones were completely different, I had exhaled, being agitated that she was playing her little mind games to get closer to him; his response however was joyful, as if he was thankful she had given my number to him.
"Who is that [f/n]?" Katelynn asks as she walks closer to me. I was about to answer until she took the phone away from me, "is this her boyfriend she has told me about?" Katelynn kept talking as I was trying to get my phone back, as I was I heard him repeat the word 'boyfriend,' except it wasn't in his cheery voice like before. "Yeah what was it [f/n], Mark? Clark? Maybe it was Jonathan?"
"Katelynn! Can I have my phone back please?!" I pleaded trying any maneuver I can to receive my phone back. "Don't listen to what she's saying Ji!" I exclaimed still circling around the taller woman.
Katelynn had stopped and held the phone away from both of us, "what are you doing?" I asked her as I stood still, looking at my fragile phone dangling from her fingertips.
She replied as if everything went according to her plan, "you care."
I just stood there, beyond confused. I didn't know what she meant by that. "What do you mean?"
"You didn't want Jiyong to believe that you supposedly had a boyfriend." She said into the phone, smiling at how content and smooth everything was going.
I looked at the phone to see the screen turn on, showing his number and the time adding up, he was very silent.
Katelynn didn't say anything but give my phone back, afterwards she chased after Marilyn.
"Uh, hello?" I speak into the phone growing embarrassed on what Jiyong may think of me now.
"That was interesting." He spoke up after what had felt like centuries. "Your roommates really do tease you a lot." He chuckles into the phone.
I began to grow red, trying to find words to say to him, "It- they're- I-" I exhaled loudly and spoke into the phone, "they don't mean any harm." Followed by a small laugh trying to lessen the fact I was nervous.
"Aha, okay, okay." He comments, his words soaking in sarcasm. "By the way, who's your boyfriend that your friend was talking about?" His voice in a teasing tone.
"It's nothing really." I reply, feeling nervous as my cheeks begin to grow red. "He's my ex now, or has been for a while actually."
He doesn't talk back but only responds with a hum of understanding. "Maybe we can get to know about each other later?"
I remove the phone from my ear to look at the time, "Jiyong, it's already 9:30 and I still have to study!" Unfortunately, I neglected his offer. I would have taken his offer if it was on a weekend and it had been an earlier time, but chances were we was bad at timing things. "Aren't you-"
As soon as I was going to ask if he was busy with work a voice chirped in, except they weren't speaking in Korean? Then another voice was heard, he was telling the other guy to stop rambling in Japanese about an anime. "Uh, is everything okay?"
"Ah, yeah. It's just Dae trying to get some last minute watching time." He responded, hesitating to say 'watching time' as if he was looking for another word but couldn't find.
I chuckled into the phone, "Yes yes, I know how this Dae feels. I too try to get some 'last minute watching time.'" I say in a teasing voice.
"You know what I mean!" He sighed into the phone as a low chuckle was faintly heard. "I have to go now, go get some last minute watching time."
"You see, I can't. I have to study." I replied pouting as I walked towards where Katelynn and Marilyn were hanging out.
"That sucks. Maybe tomorrow then?" He asks, "when you're out with me?" He adds into his sentence as smooth as a Segway.
I smiled and looked up at the night sky, "Yeah, why not? I wouldn't mind getting some last minute watching time with you. Maybe we'll find something that we both like?" I carried on the conversation as I looked down to see a yellow painted strip on the ground carefully balancing myself to walk in a straight line.
"I think I already know what we both like." He responded within a few seconds.
"Really? What's that?" I ask, taken aback that he had already found something that we have in common.
"You'll have to wait until tomorrow." He adds, I could tell he was grinning like an idiot on the other side.
Once again before I could have replied I was interrupted.
"Ji!" The voice was different from the other two from before. "Stop talking to your girlfriend." He said right into the phone.
My cheeks began to radiate a bright red. Maybe it was because of the fact he told him to stop talking to me? But he was a busy man, so I had no right to get upset over something as little as that.
"As sorry sorry. I have to go now [f/n]. I'll talk to you tomorrow." He replies as he hangs up right away.
Maybe it was the assumption that I was his girlfriend that got me into the state I'm in now.
Either way, I couldn't tell Marilyn or Katelynn about this.
