I don't know who said 'The best things in life are free' but they clearly didn't drink. We were sitting in the junkyard, I was chugging down a bottle of beer, and Max was sitting shyly because she didn't wanna try it. Not a lot has changed with her. She's still the same old Maximillion I remember. I'd changed so much she probably didn't even know we were so close all this time. We've probably walked past each other so much and not known it. Like when she saved my life in the bathroom from that psychopath, Nathan. There was no way she could recognize me, with my blue hair and punk style. When she left me as a blond haired child.
Speaking of when she left, after she did I found someone to try and take her place. Of course, no one could replace Max, and our friendship wasn't the same as Max and I's. Hell, it wasn't even a friendship. It was a relationship. Before Max came back, they went missing. I put up missing posters for her, and I found her in the end... just not how I wanted to. Rachel... She had cheated on me, with Frank none the less. When I found her she was dead, and buried in the ground. She'd been dead for so long she'd already been decomposed enough to see bone. I always told her I loved her to death but that isn't what I meant. That's besides the point, I had Rachel when I didn't have Max, and Rachel went missing, then Max returned. We found out what happened to Rachel, but long before that I realized I was getting a crush on ol' Super Max. I remembered when we first reunited, an we spent the night at my house.
We woke up that morning around the same time. Max started her day with a selfie, and I had to photobomb, so I jumped up from my sleep and yelled, 'Photobomb!' And Max took our picture. I don't really remember how we got to truth or dare but it happened. When it was Max's turn, she finally took a step to the adventurous side, and chose dare. She gave me the chance to do what I had been wanting to do for a while. 'I dare you to... kiss me.'
'What?'
'Unless you're too scared.' She took a moment to decide if she would or not. She jumped me, by pressing herself to me, along with her lips that were against mine. It was pretty short, but it was the best moment I'd had with her in my entire life. When she got off me I said, 'I guess I'll tell Warren he doesn't stand a chance.' And that earned a chuckle from Max, followed by a little bit of blush. In that moment, all I wanted to do was kiss her again and again and again, but I didn't because if I'm being honest, I wasn't entirely over Rachel. That and the fact that she was still my best friend and I didn't wanna jeopardize our friendship because she's all I had. Looking back at that, I should have kissed her again and again. Take the risk. Not make fun of her for being a chicken then be a hungry hungry hippo-crit by chickening out of kissing her when she had the guts to do it but I didn't.
We were sat down at what used to be a junkyard, which is now just a mess that has objects scattered everywhere you'd walk. She was sat on a tire, and I was on a barrel. 'Hey, Max. Can I ask you something?'
'You just did.'
'Nice one, Cauliflower.' I said with sarcasm.
'Shoot.'
'Why didn't we leave?'
'What do you mean?'
'This town. There's nothing left for us here. My mom is dead. David is dead. Kate, Warren... everyone's dead. Why'd we stay?'
'I don't know. I guess it just felt unnatural.' She shuffled around a little.
'This town is destroyed. There's nothing we can do here anymore.' I took a sip of my beer, 'Max... you wanna get out of here?'
'Uh... Yeah, sure.' I jumped up off my barrel and walked about three feet to get to Max and tossed my beer in the distance. I put my hands out. She grabbed them, and I pulled her up. After she was standing, we let go of each other, and started walking around the junk in the junkyard to get to my truck that was parked somewhere in the front. When we reached my truck, we hopped in and I pulled off onto the road. There was a long road that we followed for awhile to the closest town. I drove with one hand on the wheel and the other sitting in the center of Max and I. I inched my hand to the right very slowly to find Max's. When I had found her's, I slid my hand to align with her's and interlocked our fingers. She didn't say anything, although she was a little confused by it, because when she first felt my hand touch her's she looked down, and just stared until I slid it into place, then she looked up to me. My eyes were focused on the road, but I made short glances at her and said while staring at the road, 'You look like you've seen a ghost.'
She still remained silent. She pushed our hands onto my lap, and cuddled up to me, resting her head on my shoulder.
