After Brock and I changed into our civilian clothes, we went to get Alanna. She hadn't saw the match and was curious why I had a bandage on my head. I assured her that it was just a boo-boo and that I was fine. Right around this time, Brock got a text from his farmhand that Willow had went into labor and she should foal within a few hours. Once we heard the news, we quickly headed toward the jet and were in the air twenty minutes later. Alanna was excited but I did talk her into sleeping a while at the back of the jet. I told her it would be at least two hours before we landed and she might as well get some sleep while we waited.
Brock and I stayed up front as he checked with his farmhand frequently to make sure Willow was doing okay. He insisted that she was doing well and he had already had the local vet check up on her. Everything was going as planned and hopefully in a few hours, she would have a healthy foal.
As he text back and forth, I checked up on my phone to find that I had several text messages from Randy, who had apparently gotten word that I was taking him to court. He threatened to mention Brock and how he had been arrested for a DUI fourteen years ago. I rolled my eyes and forwarded all the messages to my lawyer, knowing we could use each of them against him in court.
It didn't take long for Brock to see who was texting me. "I'm just curious, what in the world made you date him? Much less marry him?"
I chuckled. "I was young and desperate to fall in love. Every day since I graduated high school, I saw my classmates get married and have kids. I wanted that so badly and Randy was the first guy to offer that to me. It was puppy love, I guess."
He sighed. "Yeah, well, mistakes happen."
"For a while, I thought of it like that. But then I look at Alanna and realize that there was a reason for all that madness. I'll fight for custody and when I get it, I'll make sure she has the life she deserves."
Brock left it at that as he continued to get updates from Willow. I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open, but I fought sleep until we landed in Minneapolis. Brock got our things as I woke Alanna just long enough to get her in the truck and buckled up. By the time I was in the passenger seat, she had already dozed off to sleep. I assumed she would sleep the rest of the night, since it was just after two in the morning, and she could see the foal when she woke up, if it had arrived yet.
When we got to the house, Brock took our things inside and told me to go get Alanna in bed while he checked up on Willow. Thankfully, I picked her up and took her to bed without waking her. I hoped she would just stay asleep. I pulled the covers over her and tucked her in before closing her door quietly.
Being as tired as I was, I changed, took my makeup off and let my hair down as I got in bed. It had been a long day and I hoped sleep would take me quickly. I rolled over on my side and started to nod off as I heard my door open. Thinking it was Alanna, my eyes flew open. "What's wrong-" I sat up and saw Brock standing in the doorway. "Oh, it's you. How's Willow?"
"She's fine and hopefully, we'll have a foal by dawn."
I nod. "Good." I laid back down and shut my eyes, hoping he would get the hint. He did and moments later, I heard the door close...
For the first little while, I had trouble sleeping. I tossed and turned and just couldn't get situated. I was getting annoyed when finally, peaceful sleep came.
When I woke the next time, I decided to fix my pillow. It was hard and needed a little fluffing. It was still dark and I had been sleeping on my side, when I noticed I couldn't fluff my pillow because my pillow was Brock. He lay on his back, sound asleep with one arm around me. I had draped one of mine over him and immediately withdrew it. What in the world is wrong with me? And why is he in here?
I tried to move away but his grip was too tight. I glanced at the clock beside of him which read 6:07. It would be dawn soon and perhaps he would get off of me. Since I didn't have a choice, I remained still and hoped that he would wake up soon. After twenty minutes had passed, I tried to wake him on purpose, without him knowing that I was awake.
I moved around a little and kept my eyes closed. When that didn't work, I elbowed him in the side and he grunted a little before removing his arm. I could feel his eyes on me as I turned over on my other side, away from him. I assumed that he had been in here checking my breathing and decided to stay in here since he was supposed to check it every thirty minutes or so. But it would have been nice to ask me first since it was my bed.
It was quiet a moment before I heard the bed squeak. I thought he was getting up but boy was I wrong. He turned over toward me and snaked his arm around me once more.
He has to be asleep.
He has to be...
He wouldn't be doing this if he was awake... Would he?
I was confused but the longer I laid there, the more I didn't seem so awkward. I hadn't shared a bed with anyone since Randy and even though I thought I didn't miss it, maybe I had. Maybe I just made myself believe a lie.
I laid in that exact spot until seven. The sun was just peeking out behind the mountains and Brock began to stir. As quietly as he could, he removed his arm from around my waist and exited the room. Once I was sure he was gone, I got up and changed.
Knowing that it would be chilly outside and probably wet, since there was a dew on, I threw on a shawl, some jeans, and old boots. I quickly detangled by hair and put on enough makeup so that I wouldn't look like a zombie. Once I was decent, I checked on Alanna, who was still sleeping soundly in her bed. I quietly closed the door and went to look for Brock. He wasn't in his room and I couldn't find him anywhere in the house. I assumed he would be at the barn anyway, so headed that way.
It was quiet as the birds chirped and sung their morning hymns. As I got closer to the barn, I saw two shadows. One was Brock, for sure, but the other, I had no idea. As I got closer, I made myself known. "So, do we have a foal?"
Brock turned around. "Yes, we do and it's a girl." He looked to the other guy standing beside him and introduced us. "Justin, this is Casey. Casey, this is my farmhand, Justin."
I nodded toward him as I realized he was pretty young. Maybe twenty three, but that was pushing it. "Pleasure to meet you, ma'am." He added.
I smiled and looked to Brock. "Alanna is still sleeping but you know as soon as she wakes up, she's gonna want to name her."
He nodded. "I know and I told her she could."
I heard a horse grunt and looked behind Brock. Willow was standing as the foal nursed. She was a gorgeous foal too! She was black and white, something I wasn't expecting coming from Willow. I walked toward the gate to get a better look at her and when I did, she turned to me and hopped toward the gate. I laughed. "Well, aren't you a sweet 'lil surprise."
I petted her as she nuzzled my arm. I started to turn around when I heard Alanna. "Mommy! Mommy! Is it here? Is the baby here?" Sure enough, Alanna came running into the barn, trying to see over the gate.
I nodded. "She is."
Her eyes lit up. "It's a girl!" I picked her up and allowed her to see the foal in the stall. "Oh, she's pretty! I thought she would look like Willow though."
"I know, I did too, but I guess she was quite the surprise."
Alanna made me put her down as she looked to Brock. "Do I still get to name her?"
He smiled. "Of course."
She thought a moment before looking back to the foal. "Her name is Surprise."
