Chapter 1 - It's been a year

So much has happened the past year. I honestly have no idea how I survived all of it, but fact is, I did. A horrible simulation, a psycho stalker, the loss of my guinea pigs, a break up with Alfie, I've survived it all. But it had me broken.

I was too scared to go anywhere by myself, because William still was a free man. Staying alone at home was also something that I was terrified of. Every little noise made me jump and hide behind the couch. I was so scared, so terrified, that he'd come back for me. But even after a year since the fire in the shed, I still hadn't seen or heard from him. I supposed he had gone abroad or something, scared for the police.

"It's a beautiful day," I mumbled, staring out of the window. The early spring sun was shining, which made the still wet grass sparkle. The leaves were growing back on the trees so I could see a few birds sitting there, working on a nest.

"It is," Alfie agreed next to me. We were sitting in the couch, waiting for our guests to arrive. I nervously played with the silver ring around my finger. "It'll be alright."

"I don't know how they'll react," I shrugged. Today we were going to tell our friends about the engagement. We've invited them at our house to tell them the good news. I was nervous what they'd think of it. I knew Tanya and Jim would beam with happiness. Megan and Helena were probably going to be very happy as well. But Thomas... I didn't know.

"They'll find it amazing, splendid, spiffing," Alfie laughed my nervousness away.

"Spiffing?" I repeated him, holding my laughter. "That sounds too posh for you."

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn," he said, making the most posh voice I've ever heard.

"Stop it," I playfully pushed him. He was going to push me back, but the door bell rang, so he gave me a fake angry look and got up to open the door.

He soon came back with Helena, Thomas and little Rose. Rose was Helena and Thomas' little baby. She was so adorable with her mother's hazel eyes and her father's dark hair. Helena was carrying Rose in her arms and Thomas had his arm wrapped around Helena, holding her close to him.

Yes, they were together again, but this time things seemed very serious between them. It looked like little Rose had brought the two of them together again. It was also because of Rose that Thomas had decided to stop teaching. Combining the two jobs was just not possible with a baby.

I stood up to welcome them. I hugged Helena, carefully to not hurt the baby. "How are you?" I asked her friendly.

"Very well," she smiled warmly, looking from Thomas to Rose, as to show me why she was so well. I smiled back at her, happy that everything had worked out for her in the end.

I said hi to little Rose as well and she smiled at me, like she understood. I then was hugged by Thomas, who after the explosion of the shed had a very scarred left side of his face. His left arm was also pretty damaged, but you couldn't tell because I've never seen him wear short sleeves anymore.

We broke the hug and did I imagine it or did I see his eyes flash towards the ring around my finger? I wasn't sure but then he winked at me and I knew that he already matched the puzzle pieces.

We all sat down in the sofa and talked small talk. How the weather was a little too cold for this time of the year and how much Rose has grown the last few months. It was all a little awkward and I didn't understand why. For the past year we've all hung out together a few times. Thomas and Alfie still weren't the best of friends, but at least they could now sit in the same room without killing each other mentally.

"Zoe," Helena suddenly spoke. "Can I breast feed Rose somewhere? I think she's a little hungry." A slight blush appeared on her cheeks.

"Of course," I smiled cheerfully, trying to make her feel as comfortable as possible. I stood up and led the way to our spare room upstairs. I thought it might be nice for her to sit there on the bed.

"Thank you," she smiled. I smiled back at her politely and quickly went back downstairs. I was going to burst into the room, when I noticed that Thomas and Alfie were half whispering to each other. Finding that a little odd, I slowed my pace and started walking calmer.

"Thank you so much for telling me," I heard Alfie, who was trying to keep his voice down.

"I thought you should know," Thomas replied. I could imagine him shrug as he did so.

"We better don't tell Zoe," Alfie said. "Or Helena for that matter."

"I wasn't planning to do that," Thomas agreed. I wanted to know what was going on this time. What was so bad that they wouldn't tell me or Helena? Just when I thought they were going to say more the door bell rang and I jumped. I quickly ran to the front door so they wouldn't know I had been listening.

I opened the door to reveal Tanya Burr and Jim Chapman smiling bright at me. "Hey guys!" I smiled. I was so happy to see them. Since everything that had happened I wasn't really talking to any of my former youtube friends. Except for Tanya and Jim. No matter how many times I pushed them away they wouldn't let me.

"Hey Zoe!" Tanya chirped excited. "I'm so happy to see you!"

"I'm happy to see you too!" I cried. "Come in." Tanya strolled past me and went over to the other room where she greeted Thomas and Alfie.

"Hey Zo," Jim smiled at me. "I've missed you."

"I've missed you too," I said with a smile.

"Let's go shall we," he spoke and entered the living room where the others were chatting away. I stood in the hallway for a while, still letting it sink in what had happened earlier. There was one thought that wouldn't leave my mind. The only thing that I could think of that was so horrible that they couldn't tell me was that William was back.
