Today had been such a long day. Alexis had come back, and her and Lynden weren't speaking anymore. I tried to talk to him about it but he wouldn't say anything. I knew he felt bad, and I knew that he did care. Lynden was the type of guy that cared too much, he just.. showed it in a weird way. Anyway, so Alexis sat on her own at a table and soon enough people were throwing spitballs at her and calling her nasty names. She just sat there, as still as a statue. Just moving her lunch around with her fork, never eating any of it.
"I'm going to go sit with her." I told Lynden.
"What?" Lynden said in suprise, dropping his forkful of mashed potatoes.
"Well, you won't, and somebody has to." I immeadiatley regretted the words as they came out of my mouth, but it was true. I quickly stood up and walked towards Alexis's table.
"C'mon, Sara, you're better than that! Don't sit with the school slut. Her emo-ness might rub off on you." Chase, the school's quarterback and boyfriend of none other than Tessabelle yelled at me, but I ignored him and sat down next to Alexis.
She didn't even look up.
"So." I said after a minute of silence. She didn't reply, just started stabbing at her food. I don't know why I annoyed her so much, but there had to be something.
"Why do you hate me?" I asked. Alexis looked over in suprise, but again, kept her mouth closed.
Vrrrrrrr, my phone vibrated. I pulled it out of my bag.
Hey, we still on for tonight?
It was Noah. Noah had been a friend of mine since childhood. And he was hopelessly in love with me. I tried to be nice about it, but theres only so much you can do, right? I mean, I had a boyfriend. We were only hanging out tonight because we were science lab partners.
Yup :)
I texted back.
Sweet. Meet me by the front doors right after school.
I didn't reply. The bell rang, signalling the end of lunch, and Alexis was out of her seat and out the door before I could even mutter a word to her.
The rest of the day went by slowly. I could barely focus in biology or math. Finally the end of the day bell rang and I headed to my locker. I put away the biology and math textbooks and picked up the chemistry one. I headed to the door outside, and sure enough, Noah was waiting in his car. Always dependable. I smiled a little to myself as I got into the passenger seat.
The truth was that I missed Noah. We used to hang out all the time but now I felt like it was better not to because I was scared that Lynden might get mad and start a fight. Not that we fight often, we hardly ever do. I'm just not a person for conflict.
"How's it going, beautiful?" Noah asked, smiling over at me.
I decided to let the beautiful comment slide. "Pretty good, you?"
"Pretty good." He repeated. "I've missed you." He said softly, not looking at me as he started up the car.
"Yeah." I said softly. "I've missed you too."
We pulled up at his house and went inside.
We did chemistry for a little while, trying to finish the lab report, I swear we were, but we kept getting sidetracked. I had forgotten how funny Noah was, and how just being around him just made my day better.
But after every joke, every smile, he seemed to remember something sad and his face would turn into a frown. Eventually I asked him about it.
He just shook his head. "It's nothing." he said, trying to smile at me, but I could see right through it.
