What do you say to the five people who have just condemned you to death? Laugh, cry, tell them to go to hell? Well for me I had none of those options. I had to take the decision and walk away. Unfortunately doing what I was told wasn’t always my strong point

I knew I would not be the last girl standing in front of these figures but I would be the most powerful. I was the youngest daughter of our towns Shaman. I shouldn’t have even been born but I was and that meant I was seemingly useless to the council. They only needed my two older sisters and brother. They were the useful ones. I was disposable.

I glared at each one of the five figures each one hiding behind their cloaks. The cloaks should have made them look heavenly, god-like even but right now all I saw was cowards to afraid to stop a seventeen year old girl be sent to her death. Each of them too scared to stand up to the beasts that had terrorised our people. Well I wasn’t afraid and I knew what would happen if they sent me up there.

“Makayla Kaezak. You are to be sent to the castle at dawn tomorrow morning” one of the hooded members told me and I scowled.

“That isn’t fair. People normally get weeks” I snapped looking back at my family.

“You have been given your instructions Miss Keazak. If you don’t follow them you are the one responsible for the consequences”

“You cant hurt my family. They are too valuable to you” I snapped but my father’s firm hand on my shoulder told me it was time to be quiet. The council had spoken.

Hell. And a lot of it.

Even though my father had instructed me to be silent it didn’t stop me from glaring. I stood leaning back with my arms folded across my chest showing them that although I was being silent my rage wasn’t gone. It was burning like a coal in my chest telling me to scream at them and tell them that I would not go. That I refused to be sent to some asshole too lazy to get their own food.

But the weight of my fathers hand told me the decision wouldn’t be a wise one so I kept silent anger causing tears to sting my eyes. I knew he was angry like me but somehow he hadnt even said a word just nodded or shook his head.

“You may leave us” one of the figures told my family and I walked out first opening and slamming the door without even touching it.
