She was beautiful. She had jet black hair which was long and curly, with bright blue eyes and she had pale white skin with blood red lips. We had been married almost a year now and our first born child was on the way. Ruby had always been beautiful, even back when we were kids, she had been my best friend from the day we met, until one day I had to let her know how I felt, and it made me the happiest man alive.
Ruby was weeks away from giving birth and I was doing all I could to keep her comfortable.
"Your too good to me" she whispered to me one morning as I bought her breakfast in bed, I gave her a smile knowing that it was the only way I could ever repay her for what she made of my life, everything was perfect. I went downstairs to fetch my own breakfast before going back to join Ruby in bed.
A few weeks later our child was born. We had a baby girl called Ebony, she had pale skin, tufts of dark hair and pale blue eyes, it was clear who she took after. My heart swelled with happiness at the sight of my wife holding our daughter.
I watched my wife as she held the bundle in her arms.
"Our baby" she said, smiling up at me. An hour later we were back home, staring down at our daughter in her cot.
Months later I was making dinner while Ruby was taking a walk in the snow, with Ebony in the pushchair. I walked through to the living room to put some music on when I thought I heard a scream from outside. I ran out to see what it was, I looked around frantically but there was nothing there. Then my eyes fell upon a pair of legs, coming out from behind the tree with a pushchair beside them.
When I saw the person wasn't moving, I phoned for an ambulance, then I heard the shrill cry of the baby that was in the pushchair. Then I realised, I knew that cry. I ran towards the baby and picked her up, then my mind traveled toward who the body had belonged to.
My eyes slowly moved across to see a woman lying there. Ruby. My legs almost buckled beneath me. She was lying there, still concious but unable to move, her black hair was in a mess of curls, she had a tear running down her face and blood was seeping through her dress. I put Ebony down and sat beside my wife, holding her in my arms.
"I love you" I whispered. She tried to say it back but struggled to talk. The tears began to run freely down my face as I rocked her in my arms.
"Angel of mine, can I thank you?" I began to sing to her in a whisper through my flowing tears.
"You have saved me, time and time again"
"Angel I must confess, its you that always gives me strengh and I don't know where I'd be, without you"
I felt her grow stiff in my arms as she died.
"Come back Ruby! Please" I cried out, begining to sob. I couldn't see for tears, I couldn't breath, I couldn't move. I needed her, she was my angel.
