Chapter 1
I looked up at the large building, the one-way windows reflected the clouds of the gloomy sky. I turn my head towards the large white sign that says Grab and Go Coffee, an innocent cafe under a suspicious building. I sighed and stepped inside, praying it wouldn't start raining later today. I looked down to the brown tiles of the cafe as I made my way towards the back, making a right to an elevator that comfortably hid from the innocent visitors of Grab and Go. Then again I don't know how many people here are actually detectives.
I slid my identification card into the small grey machine, the red light clicked green and the doors opened. I was nervous, of course I was. I never thought I'd ever get involved in the detective business. A dangerous one at that. I took a deep breathe. Here goes nothing...
The elevator automatically ascended to the 5th floor, I assume the lower floors were for the freelance members. Maybe it was all a bad idea. I thought to myself, a little too late. I was interested in the money after all...
It all began two weeks ago. I worked at a magazine company, a pretty well know one at that. InkWood, it was a large company that fueled several magazines ranging from business to teen entertainments. I took jobs from most of the sections, gathering information as I did not get along well with a pen and paper or more like a keyboard and screen.
I had just got out of my old black Toyota after a day of trying to get celebrity scandals, as I was heading towards my apartment I was stopped by a man in a suit. He didn't give a name but he handed me a card and introduced me to the F.D.A. I didn't quite get it until he mentioned my HSAM, Higher Superior Autobiographical Memory. I ended up running off and locking my door after that, nobody should've known and I didn't know how he found out either, I suppose detectives have their ways... HSAM is a rare condition that supposedly less than 100 of the population possess. It was the ability, or more like the curse that allowed me and all the others to remember every detail of their life. Good or bad, it's as if an event from years ago had happened only a day before.
The same man met up with me several times before I finally cracked, I listened to his proposal and even served him some tea. In the daylight, I saw that he was a tall man with short spiky blond hair and of course with one of those cliché black sunglasses. He told me his name was Matt, which I assumed to be a fake name. I just introduced myself as Rowan Israel since I figured he already knew my full name anyways. He told me that the agency was very bent up on getting me to go there and with the amount of money promised, I didn't refuse. Working at InkWood brings more money than most other companies, however my grandparents on my mother's side had left my parents and I with a large sum of debt due to their combined gambling addiction. My parents had retired and the job to pay back the debt landed on me. Although I've been on a payment plan and InkWook doesn't disappoint, I figured it'd be better to get it over with and maybe treat myself a little. Plus, I was curious.
Matt told me that I needed to take a one week leave and everything should be explained, he said that it probably won't bother my work at InkWood after that week anyways. But he said that the week was necessary for me to get accustomed.
Which brings me back to now, heading to my new side job on a Monday morning. The elevator arrived and the doors opened, revealing a not so impressive office like area. However there were barely any people in the cubicles. I stepped out and headed towards the main office.
Straight, turn right, left and head straight. Room 509—
I gathered my confidence and opened the large wooden door, with a cringe worthy creak, it opened to a room with a large desk and closed with a bang. An older man appearing to be in his 40s behind it and a woman in a suit beside me, along with several other people spread throughout the large office. I looked around, scanning the faces of each person. Before I could speak, a loud voice greeted me.
"Mr. Israel! Welcome, welcome!" The man behind the desk boomed.
I'm ashamed to say that I jolted, as a 23 year old man, I seem to get startled quite easily... "Hello...Sir." I added awkwardly. I swear, one day I'm going to be fired for being plain awkward.
"Don't be so nervous! Come!" He said loudly, gesturing for me to step forward. The few people in the room were staring at me, gee thanks for making me feel right at home. I grumbled in my mind. Oh great, is this going to be like Sherlock? Is someone going to come up to me and tell me everything about me?
I stepped forward, walking faster as I stopped two meters away from his desk. Up close, I can see that the man had grey stubbles and dark brown hair mixed with greys and whites. I could see that despite his jolly voice and smile, he was someone that many people feared.
"Well, Mr. Israel." He begun. "I, as the director of the F.D.A. welcome you as an official member." He says as he slid a plastic card towards me. I hesitated before grabbing it and stepped back after. I suppose this is my official ID... "I assume that...Matt... Has explained to you how things will work." He says as he pulled his arm back and rested it on top of the expensive looking wood.
"Ye-" I start to agree before the door slammed open. I jerked forward before turning around. To see a man around my age with jet black hair, his bangs covered his right eye with his hair brushed back on the left, that has to be dyed I thought as I squinted at him. I stumbled back as the man walked towards the director after giving me a look.
"Ah Mr. Hynes!" The director clapped his hands together joyously. "Please! Let me introduce you! This is Kaiser Hynes! The person who has especially requested your presence!"
What an odd name I thought. The man whose name was supposedly Kaiser turned towards me, I caught a glimpse of surprise before his face went back to being expressionless.
"That's the one?" He says, almost sounding disappointed. Earning a glare from me.
"Oh don't be so rude Mr. Hyn-!"
"I also don't appreciate you telling him my real name." He says interrupting the director, earning a few scoffs from the people around the room. The director, smiled patiently before opening his mouth. "Well, he's bound to know sooner or later."
Kaiser walked over towards me, giving me a look. This bastard, he's just met me and he's looking down on me. And isn't he the one who wanted to work with me?? I gave him a blank look before he turned back to the director. "Alright then, I assume I can just take him now?" He says and the director tilted his head, then a slight nod.
"Alright, let's go. I'm going to explain things real quick and you'll learn along the way." He begun as he sped walked through the doors. I stumbled backwards and practically ran after him, almost hitting the door on the way out. "I want to get started right away, just try to be useful."
"W-wait!" I shouted after him, finally catching up to his speed. "What are we starting??" I asked frantically.
"What do you think dimwit? Detective things of course!"
