Prologue

The night I left was beautiful.
The moon was full and shined its silver light all over Boston even though it seemed like it was fighting against the city lights. It was so big and close to the earth that as I walked through the streets of my hometown I thought I could reach out and touch it. The winter cold slipped into my clothes and touched my skin with fingers of ice, making me shiver violently in the dark. As I kept walking, I decided to ignore the harsh cold and enjoy my last night in this city. My hometown. The place where I was born and raised. Where my suffocating family was going to stay as I leave far away. The backpack on my shoulders became heavier as the seconds passed and the lights that never seemed to go off in the city began to give me a headache. I stepped slightly off of the sidewalk and looked both ways before crossing to the Starbucks on the other side. A sigh of relief escaped my lips when the hug of warm air enveloped me as I opened the door and stepped inside. I walked over to the counter where, surprisingly, a line wasn't formed.

"Good evening miss, may I take your order?" The pretty girl behind the counter asked.

I gave her a warm smile as I took in her pretty green eyes and red hair, "Yes, a hot chocolate and croissant. To go please."

She nodded as she plugged it into the computer, "Name?" She asks.

"Wren." I reply.

" Okay. Your order will be ready shortly." She says before walking away from the counter and to the coffee machine.

"Mhm." I simply respond as I also walk away and take a seat in one of the tables.

It was already 8 but I didn't have to be at the airport till nine, so I decided to stay a while and took out my laptop. Quickly, I turned it on and connected it to the Starbucks internet. Once it was ready, I went to my email and saw that I had one from the lady I bought the apartment from.

Subject: Apartment done and ready

Good evening Ms. Angelov, I am glad to inform you that everything in the apartment is fixed and ready for you to move in. We moved everything to its place like you asked and now all you have to do is show your identification to the office and they'll give you your keys. We hope you enjoy your new apartment. If you have any more questions or problems please contact us, you have our information.

A smile spread on my lips as I read through the email and I couldn't help but feel excited at the news. Everything was ready! All I had to do now was get to Cali and move in.

"Wren?" Someone called out from the counted, snapping out my thoughts.

I quickly put my laptop back in my backpack and grabbed my coffee from the pretty red head with a quick thank you. As I made my way outside I phoned a taxi and patiently waited for it to come pick me up. When it got here, I got in and told him to take me to the Boston airport. I looked out the window at the night sky as he drove away from the Starbucks. A deep sadness seemed to drill itself in my chest and the need to cry made my eyes misty with tears. At the age of 22, I'm disappointed to admit that I've never left Boston. I wanted to. Oh! I've always wanted to... But I've always been too scared of my mother and her family. The only person in my family that tolerated me was my father and it hurts that I didn't say goodbye. The moon kept battling with the city lights and I realized that, that's how I felt right now. I was battling something beautiful and free with something fake and poisoning. I tried to make myself understand that I was doing nothing wrong but it didn't seem to work. So as the taxi parked in front of the airport and I stepped out, I vowed to myself never to come back. I would never let myself be tormented by this place because I am the moon. Free and beautiful, nothing will ever hold me back again.
