I looked at my reflection in the boys' bathroom mirror. Tousled white curls, brown irises peering out from pale skin. I wondered if anyone else looked at themselves like a stranger as I did. I never looked quite what I thought I looked like. I ran a wet hand over my face, and then exited the bathroom.
I turned left, to head back to algebra. But what happened after that was better described as very intense chemistry.
I walked into an intense kissing session between my younger brother Daniel and his girlfriend Zoe. I didn't know what happened inside me exactly, because they had been dating for months, and I had known, but something just snapped and I- I growled. Actually made an animal-like noise deep from my gut like I was some beast in a zoo.
Zoe and Daniel looked up, startled, at me. I would have probably been equally as startled had I not been so busy being furious. I stormed past them and slammed out of the front double doors of the school. I blinked, temporarily blinded by the sunlight. I shook my head, trying to clear it. But then I heard someone shout, "Ariel!" behind me, and it just got clouded again. I ran, down the street, down a couple more streets. I ran until I couldn't breathe, and I had to sit down on a curb.
Then the confusion hit. What was that all about? Why had I flipped out like that? All my brother had done was kiss Zoe. Zoe, his girlfriend. The beautiful half-Indian lady, whose hair cascaded down her back in a pitch black waterfall and whose electric blue eyes disagreed with her hair and brown complexion as my platinum hair and icy skin disagreed with my dark gaze.
I took out my phone, thinking to call my brother and apologize, but was stopped when I caught sight of my reflection in the blank screen. I'd looked at myself a lot of times before without recognizing the man in the mirror. But now I finally recognized the foreign look in my eyes. I was jealous of Daniel. Jealous of my fraternal twin and his date partner because I had feelings for her. I always had feelings for her, and now I knew it. I was in love with Zoe Kari.
My phone vibrated in my hand. Little Bro, the screen read. I pressed decline.
