Chapter Two

I wasn’t supposed to be in the Spectrum. If my mother found out then I would be under house arrest for the rest of my life… But the truth was that I came here every day to look after all those poor people striving to keep themselves alive because of her. The rules weren’t fair.

Statuses were handed out to people whether they were good or bad. Nobody could decide except those within the House of Chambers where all the elders, politicians and men that had been married into their families lived.  Unfortunately, I was one of those ‘lucky’ children to be born into The Chamber. I’d been the first girl for years and everybody was so proud that their village wouldn’t become extinct as soon as they’d believed. But I was different.

Today was the day that I had planned to commit suicide…  I was next in line to the throne of Mythrin. The town that had been left behind when the entire universe had become a different species. The town called yesterday…

I was in the Spectrum because I was of use there. No healer could attend any of the women who had decided to go against my mother’s rules and not marry before bearing their children to men that she didn’t approve of.  Most of the people were living off boiled cabbage leaves, I normally brought them something more substantial when I came to heal people. Health was an issue with such poor hygiene. But the problem was, not enough people from The Chambers realised what The Spectrum was like. The men who came from here were forbidden to speak of it and some women didn’t even realise that it existed… I had to give credit to my mother for her levels of secrecy. I’m just thankful that nothing can get through me without a fight. If some of the women just realised where their husbands came from, they might go against my mother and all those in line to her throne ,  including me, and finally get over the lies that she’s taught them.

She knows I’m different though… That’s why she’s holding on to her husband and relying on him for a second daughter.
