S/O to ohsnapitzcloe for this prompt!

Why did I get her that cat? Thorne thought.

It was a question he'd been asking himself a lot lately. For her birthday, Thorne had gotten Cress a Ragdoll kitten. At first, it seemed like the perfect gift. Cats were normally quiet and reserved, and Cress was normally quiet and reserved, too; it was a match made in heaven. He knew she loved animals from the day he'd met her at a Maroon 5 concert she'd been dragged to.

Cress didn't outright say she loved animals, but it wasn't hard to see it. If there was one thing Thorne knew about women, from his experience, was that they all shared a common adoration for animals. Whether they were dogs, cats, fish, birds, squirrels, elephants, tigers, or ants.

Cress just had this thing about her that made him believe she was a cat-person. And she was. From the moment she laid her eyes on Mila, she was in love. Maybe a little too in love.

Thorne had been blown off several times because of that god forsaken cat.

"I have to take her to the vet for her check-up."

"I'd love to get lunch, but Mila needs more cat food from the store."

"I can't just leave her alone."

He didn't mind at first, but then it got a little excessive. Sometimes he'd call her and she wouldn't answer. Then he'd message her, and she's text back something like, "Can't talk, Mila's sleeping."

He couldn't believe that kitten had stolen his girlfriend.

Thorne would come over to her apartment and he'd be completely ignored. Cress would be playing with Mila, or taking pictures of Mila, or knitting things for Mila, or just looking at Mila.

One time he went over and watched Cress pet her for thirty minutes straight. He just sat there. In complete silence. While she was just--

But every time he caught himself wishing he hadn't given her that kitten, he reminded himself that she was happier than she had ever been before. It wasn't like she was always ignoring him, just a little more than he would like. Cress did answer her phone and talk to him a lot. She did go out to lunch and dinner with him regularly.

So why did I get her that cat?

Because he loved her, and she deserved as much happiness and joy in her life as she could possibly have.

But Thorne still hated that cat for stealing his girlfriend.
