Chapter 1- Just the beginning of Hell

" Hey Bella" Carl called over to me. I jogged over and kept my eyes on the ground.
" Yeah" I said.
"Would you like to play a game of chess with me" He asked innocently.
" No thank you" I say. We have been sitting on the highway for six hours. Everyone was starting to panic and worry. Just a few hours before I had been at the liquor store buying daddy a few bottles of Jack Daniels. Daddy always got home at five. Mamma always made him dinner before he got home, if it wasn't done he would me mad and sometimes hit mamma. Sofia and I only got half a cup of soup and a quarter of bread and one packet of maple brown sugar oatmeal for breakfast. At lunch was when we ate the most that was daddy wasn't home. The Earth shook the ground below me along with my thoughts. I looked up to see flames, they were bombing the city. Shane and Lori clutched to Carl. My mom clutching to Sofia and Ed had a cigarette sticking out of his mouth. Everybody settled back down and Carl looked up at his mom with pleading eyes "Mamma i'm hungry". Lori looked down at Carl with sadness and regret and replied. "Baby i'm sorry, but I don't have anything." With that my mamma walked around the car and going for an MRI, only to be stopped abruptly by Ed to forcefully grab her arm and look deep into my mother's eyes, with hatred and disgust. "What do you think your doing woman." Ed said forcefully. My mom had tears brimming her eyes from fear, "Their boy is h-h-hungry." My mother stuttered. " Are you crazy woman, God your so stupid,we don't have enough to pass out to everybody." He practically yelled. I looked over to Lori trying to seem casual like she didn't hear anything as my mother came around the corner and apologized. We sat on the highway for another hour or so before the bombings got worse. A nice red SUV came flying through the air towards me and Sofia. I could hear my mother cry our names as I threw Sofia down between two vehicles one being a big Black Chevy ram and the other being and old low to the ground, beat up car. I could hear Ed laughing in the background as I threw myself on top of Sofia, as if my body was titanium and could stop the red SUV from crushing us. I squeezed my eyes shut telling Sofia that I love her and waited for the impact that never came. I looked up to see the SUV barely balancing on the two vehicles. I quickly pulled Sofia up and threw her towards my mom as I heard the vehicle start to give way. I got up just as it came crashing to the ground. "They are bombing the highway, its time we leave and find shelter." Lori said still shaken up. "I know a place up in the mountains." Shane stated. I walked up to the small family about to say byes, when my father screams for us to come grab bags leaving him with nothing.
