"Hurry up," the seven year-old, Ben said while rapping on the bathroom door.
"I have to make sure that I look proper. You do too, but I am the one that actually could be Reaped. Remember, my name is in the bowl five times without tessera and then five more times with tessera. I have ten slips of paper with my name on it in that bowl," Hunter said proudly.
Ever since he turned twelve, Hunter insured that he would take care of his family. His father a drunk, mother depressed, and then two younger siblings--he would apply for tessera for him and his family every year.
"But you said you were never going to be Reaped!" Ben whined.
Hunter continued washing his face and then stepped out of the bathroom in his Reaping cloths. Ben peed and then they all left for the Reaping. Hunter got his finger pricked and then went to the sixteen year-old spot in front of the District 9 Justice Hall. Hunter looked back at his mother who was holding Ben and who had Mary standing beside her.
Mary was so nervous. She couldn't be Reaped this year, but could next. Hunter was caught in that thought when the Escort for District 9 stepped up to the mic and begun speaking, "Welcome to the District 9 Reaping for the 49th annual Hunger Games! Have a wonderful Games and may the odds be ever in your favor. And without further a due, ladies first."
Tiff Epocti, the District 9 Escort, stuck her hand in the female bowl and pulled out a slip of paper. "Leisel Presscot," Tiff read. "Come on up, where are you dear?"
A freckled, yellow haired girl, about sixteen, made her way through the crowd. She stepped onto the stage beside Tiff when the Escort exclaimed, "Now for the boys."
Her hand reached into the bowl and pulled out a slip of paper. "Hunter Treakle," she exclaimed.
Hunter was in awe, years have passed and he has never been Reaped. He slowly moved to the stage and he could hear his brother crying. "Wow! We have two gorgeous Tributes from District 9 this year! Now, come this way."
The three turned around and made their way into separate rooms.
