Mary
"Dear the library will be closing." I nodded and started to pack up.
"Thank you." I say. I shakily sigh. I don't want to go home.
"Goodbye Miss. Bella." I waved goodbye and left the library. Stepping out of the cool winter air, I was glad that I had brought my jacket.
I walked home. It was a 30 minute walk from the school to my house. I hate every minute, every house that is close to mine.
Much to my fortune I was in front of my house. A complex and inside is living hell. I went and unlock it and stepped in my house. I was faced with cigarette smell and also lots of alcohol.
"Mary! Darling you're home. Let me introduce you to Richard." My mom said excitedly. My eyes widen. No. Please no. This can't be happening.
A fat old man was face in front of me. His barley hair was dyed blonde. His teeth were as yellow as a dirty yellow crayon.
"It's lovely to met you, Mary." I wanted to throw up. This can't be happening to me.
"Richard so kindly wants to have dinner with us. And afterwards won't you Mary give him desert." My mother says. I gulp and start to sweat. I want to curl up into a ball and cry.
"Please come." I stand there. Paralyzed. I don't want to move. I don't want to do what my mother does.
"Go Mary or Richard will have his desert first." My father says behind me. With that I quickly go to our table.
"Richard please sit next to me." My mother offers. I see in her eyes something but I don't know what.
"I would like sit next to Mary." Richard old grouchy voice speaks. Bile went up my throat.
"Well why-"
"Linda. He wants to sit next to Mary" My father snaps. My mother gives up. She will always give up. My dad always made her give up.
Richards is sited next to me. I make sure that we are barely touching. I am on the edge of my seat. Ready to move if he dares to touch me.
His eyelids hang so when he smiles I can barely see his eyes.
"And how old are you Mary?" He asks.
"16." I replay. This question makes me think of Blake.
Blake!
His phone number. I need a way to go into the kitchen so I could use the house phone. I need to find a way.
"Why so young! I do like them young." Richard says. He looks up and down at my body. I want to cover myself.
Despite me being fully cloth. I want layers of blankets on me. So this ugly man will not see me.
We eat. I don't touch my food. And ignore my stomach who weeps for food. Instead I ball my fist.
I am not an object. My body is not for sale. I am not my mother nor my father.
The piece of paper burns into my skin. Reminding me that I need to make that phone call. I need to have that satisfaction that I fought. That I didn't go down without a fight. That I tried. I need to have that feeling.
Because I know that if this horrible man touches me tonight and I didn't try to at least stop it, I will die. I will die and live no more. But if I call Blake then tomorrow morning I will ask Blake to help me. But I need to make that phone call.
I know that Blake won't answer. It's 1 in a million. I'm not worthy of that beautiful miracle.
"Mary why don't you go to the kitchen and prepare the desert." My mother orders me. I know this. She, father, and that old goat will discuss how much I'm worth. I feel a touch on my thigh. I stared at the filthy man. He winks at me and before he could anything I bolt up and run to the kitchen. I am going to burn this pants.
I quickly get up and go inside the small kitchen. The desert is laid out there done. I waste no time to make the phone call.
My fingers are shaken. They press each number with shakes. Please don't let me screw this up.
When it's the 5th ring, I know he will not answer. And I know that by now my father has settled on a price. Tears felled down my cheek. It's okay Mary. It's okay you're strong enough. You can make it through.
When I was about to press end I heard something. Hope leaped in my heart. I never realize I could have hope.
"Hello." Blake's voice! It's him. It's him. Disbelief and fierce hope shot through me.
"Who is this? I swear if this is a prank call Imma beat the sh-"
"B-Blake." I whisper. To nervous to talk.
"Mary? Mary! Mary, are you okay?"
"Shh. Blake help me please." I whisper.
"Yes. What's wrong? Where are you?"
"Mary! Dear! Come out!" My mother voice breaks out. I gasp. My time is going quickly.
"The café in front of the school. Please be there Blake." The door opens and I quickly end the call.
"Where you on the phone?" My mother asked. I shook my head and gave her a nervous smile.
"No mother the phone fell so I was just picking it up." I lied. She looked up and down at me. She sighed.
"I know that this is your first time and I just-"
"Mother. Let me figure it out." I softly say. Let me figure it out on my own and with the man who I love, not the man dad has chosen.
"Go upstairs and put on the outfit that I put on for you. Richard will be up in five minutes."
Five minutes. Five minutes that could change my life. I need to make them worth it. With that I go up the stairs.
