The ‘Boss’ made me stay a bit later to give me a short overview of what I would be doing for my job. I finally left, the moon full above the forest. My feet crunching softly on the gravel road. There were even crickets chirping somewhere beside the road, hidden in the short green grass. I reached Samantha’s small house, and knocked on the thin wooden door. “Just a moment.”, rang through the house. Soon the door opened and a smiling Samantha appeared in the doorway. “Hello dearie! Catherine told me you would be coming soon. She’s just in that room right here.”, Samantha lead me to a small door with a cloth covering the doorframe. Something smelled very good. Maybe some kind of sweet or meal that the modern world had lost? Utterly delicious. I pushed the cloth aside to reveal Catherine sitting on her bed, holding a blood soaked cloth.
Her gaze lifted. Her eyes were red and watery from crying. When she lifted the rag, I saw bits of glass lodged into her hand. “Samantha is bringing the leeches.”, Catherine said, getting up off her bed, and dipping the cloth into a red-tainted water. “N..No. Don’t get leeches!.”, I shouted, urgently. Her head jerked up, face became confused. “Why?”, she asked. “B…because…It’s just…just…”, my brain had become fuzzy ever since I had entered the room. The smell was almost overpowering. Catherine’s voice echoed out of my thoughts of hunger, “I know what you are.”, she said. “Wh..what I am?”, I asked, wondering that myself, even though I really knew. I just didn’t want to admit it to myself. I never wanted to be this. “You’re a vampire. Leslie. You’re a vampire.”
