Louise began to skim through various chapters, looking for the last one before they had moved to Edgewood. But a slam of the front door awakened her from her studying.
"MOM?!" Louise jumped from her position on the floor and raced into the living room. But her excitement quickly faltered when she spotted the uniformed man.
"Hello, Louise." He took off his officer's cap and nodded to her.
She crossed her arms over her chest and popped her hip to one side, trying to take on the "sassy" side of herself. Louise was not about to take orders from a stranger. Let alone someone who would eventually arrest her.
No criminal can leave a scene with out a single trace of their DNA. It's simply impossible, it was only a matter of time.
"Hello, officer...." Louise waited for him to fill in the blank.
"Ralph." He finished with a very... genuine smile?
Louise let her eyes travel up and down him, he looked about mid-thirties.
"Your last name is Ralph?" Louise guffawed.
"No, my first name. I want us to be friends, Louise. I know having your mother missing can't be the most happy situation. So I want things between us to be easy, like we're friends. The last thing I want to do is cause more friction in your life." Ralph stuck his chin out and gave another smile.
Louise felt a sudden burst of relief, she was finally being treated as the adult she believed herself to be. Even if she was only sixteen, Louise saw herself as an old soul.
"So what do you say, Lou?" He strode toward her with an outstretched hand.
Lou, only my mother called me Lou.
She took his hand graciously and shook it, her guard was suddenly down.
"So I guess I'll show my schedule, so you'll know when I come around." He unfolded a piece of grid paper and pointed the highlighted boxes to her. He would come in the mornings before school at Seven A.M., once after she got home at four P.M., again at nine P.M., and for a last check in at two A.M..
"And it will always be you, no one else?" A tinge of nervousness wrestled with her tone, but she didn't bother fight it. She needed to look feeble to Ralph, no one would ever expect a little anxiety ridden teenage girl to ever have killed someone.
"It will always be me." He caught Louise's eyes and gave her a warm, safe feeling. Ralph then reached up and ruffled her hair.
Louise studied his stature, he had to be at least middle-aged with the shadow beard he was sporting. He had a very defined jaw and fluffy black hair. His posture was great, something Louise paid attention to ever since she hurt her back and stayed hunched over all the time to avoid the pain. Louise never really could place how she hurt it. It just started one day and hurt ever since. Anna had never had enough money to get an appointment with anyone, so Louise had learned to deal with the pain.
