"Elara! Wake up!" I heard Callisto scream as he barged in my door.
"Listen!" He yelled. I listened, and all I heard was rain pouring on our ceiling."It's raining, yay. Now let me sleep." I mumbled.
"But its not raining." He said as he pointed out the window. I glanced out and saw that the sky was gloomy, but there was no rain. Weird. I sprang up and ran downstairs to the basement. I knocked once, no answer. Twice, still no answer. I walked in, and there was no sign of my parents. I ran upstairs to their bedroom, and they weren't there either. I then grabbed Callisto and we ran outside. It sounded as if an airplane was flying directly overhead. It's was almost deafening, and we had no clue what was making this sound.
"I couldn't find mom or dad anywhere." He syelled over the noise with an anxious look on his face. 'They are always in the basement,' I thought to myself, 'where could they be?' I ran inside to grab my keys and then jumped into the car starting it immediately.
"Callisto, get in!" I yelled to him. As soon as he was in I sped out of the driveway and headed towards Olivia's house. On the way there I noticed there was nobody else was on the road, and there were empty cars stopped in the oddest of places, some with the doors opened. The noise still wouldn't stop. Just a continuous monotone hum in the air, threatening to make my ears bleed. I pulled into her driveway and jumped out, running to her door and banging loudly on it. When nobody answered I barged inside and ran upstairs to her room. I threw open the door to see an empty bed. I checked her bathroom, her closet, in her parents room, the kitchen, and the living room yelling for her over and over. She's here. She has to be. Callisto spun me around and grabbed my face between his hands.
"Elara! She isn't here!" He said.
"But where is she," I cried, "she has to be here I don't know where else she would be!" I slid down the wall and put my face in my hands, struggling to hold back tears. Callisto picked me up and walked me out to the car, putting me in the passengers seat and sliding behind the wheel. Usually I would punch him in the face for touching my car, but I couldn't think straight, and it's probably better that I dont drive for now. He drove to our local grocery store which is always extreamly busy, 24 hours a day. We ran in and saw there was nobody. No employees, no customers, no homeless people on the side of the road asking for money. This was too weird.
"Where is everybody?" Callisto asked.
"I don't know.. But this is freaking me out."
"Everyone is gone. There is not a single person that I have seen." I said.
"Do you think we are the only ones left? Is it just this town, or is it the entire world?"
I pondered this for a moment. The more I thought about it, the more scared I became.
"Callisto, can we go home?" I asked quietly.
"Sure.."
He drove us home, and as soon as we got there I headed to the living room and turned on the TV. I wanted to put on the news, but none of the channels were working. I grabbed my cell phone from off the counter and googled a news channel. It wouldn't load. I am 90 percent sure my family has the fastest and strongest wifi in the world, and its not working. Something is seriously wrong, and Callisto knew it too. I could tell by the way he sat with his head in his hands. I grabbed him by his shirt and yanked him down to the basement. We both sat in front of computers and started typing away. We are really good with technology, so we knew just what to do. We were hacking our parents files. I knew Callisto was thinking the same thing as me. Last night they said they were the closest they had ever been to a breakthrough, and now they are gone? That can't be a coincidence. We need to see what they were working on, see if it is the reason everyone seems to have disappeared. I was waiting for the firewall to break when I saw a piece of paper on one of the other computers. I stood and grabbed it, seeing its from our parents."Callisto, look" I said handing him the note. He began to read it out loud.
"Dearest children, we have made our breakthrough. We have communicated with extra terrestrial beings! We don't understand what their message was, but they replied to us, and that's all that matters. However, there is always the possibility that these creatures may be of a hostile nature, so we left this for you to find just in case something shall happen to us. All our information is in our computers, and the passwords are all 'Jupiter12' so this way you can learn how to help us. If the situation is too extreme, then we want you to leave us be. Do not put your lives in danger for us. You may not know it now, but you two are exceptionally special. Not just to us, but to the entire world. You will soon find that out on your own. We love you. -Mom and Dad"
