Everything in my body felt as if I was on fire, I looked around and all I saw was the raw scratched walls of the small cell. It was what I thought Hell would be like. My skin was blistering as heat waves rose from the dirt floor .My head was pounding like a drum beat. I saw it come for me, it's bent and distorted figure unlocked the cell door, and it lunged at me with a rusty dagger. All I wanted to do was scream.....but nothing came out, it was as if the fiery heat desiccated my vocal cords. I felt a sharp jab at my side, and I felt boiling blood oozing out of the sliced skin. I felt my voice come back and screamed as the bloody dagger headed for me for a second time, but the dagger dropped next to me instead. I looked up and saw a light, it over came the darkness and lit up the cell. I could see the fires of Hell. And all I heard was a single word....
"Sarafine."
"Sara! Sarafine wake up! Please wake up! Sarafine!" I heard screaming as my soul snapped back into my body. I gasped for fresh air and pulled the sheets that stuck to my body from my skin. I felt a warm body come out of the darkness and kneel next to me; suddenly I panicked and began to scream and thrash her legs at the unknown being.
"Sara it's me!" the voice whispered harshly. "It's Daniel, its Daniel!"
Everything then came back to her, where she was, who she was, her fiancé Daniel's deep brown eyes looking at her in complete and utter horror. She felt harsh and violent sobs rise from her chest and steaming hot tears filled her eyes. Daniel put both of his large hands on her cheeks and tried to calm her down.
"It was just another dream Sara, its okay." He whispered as Sarafine shook her head frantically, he had no idea, that these non-stop nightmares are killing her slowly. Sarafine understood that all Daniel wanted to do was help her. He is a doctor after all. But that's the problem. That fact that he wants to fix her, and make her normal, like she is some deformed animal. It creates kinks where kinks shouldn't be in a relationship.
Sarafine was always different. Daniel says it's partially due her overactive imagination and anxiety and partially her relationship with her mother and sister that is what started Sarafine symptoms at such a young age.
Sarafine sees demons.
At seven Sarafine said that she saw a monstrous "creature" that crossed between the devil and an elephant in the park next to the merry go round. When she was ten she swore to the cops that she saw something in the sky, she could have sworn she saw that glimpse of a feathered wing. And at sixteen she was branded as insane by her fellow classmates when she jumped out of her desk in math class screaming. Sarafine said that she saw about a million snakes, all with electric green eyes slithering towards her. Her sister Pandora tore away from her and her mother disposed of her. She hasn't seen her mother in three years.
As the unease of the nightmare began to boil in her stomach she rested her head on Daniel's shoulder and took in a cleansing breath.
"I think I need to take a shower." Sarafine said while shivering from the cold sweat. Daniel shook his head in agreement and led her into the bathroom across the hall. His face looked calm, but Sarafine could see right through his mask. He was angry. Not at her but at life in general right now. Their apartment was a wreck. It was too small and Sarafine always felt like a caged animal. As Daniel filled up the bath tub Sarafine slipped off her shorts and tank top, and pulled out the scrunchy that kept her curly sun kissed blond hair up. Sarafine turned around to see Daniel and his tuff green eyes staring at her in a saddened way. She wanted to be alone and Daniel could tell. He kissed her good night and shut the bathroom door.
Alone she collapsed and fell apart.
Sarafine curled her body into a small ball on the cold tiles and cried silently. She didn't want Daniel to know. Her own fiancé for God's sakes to know what was going on with her. She felt bad for him. This couldn't have been the life that he wanted, Sarafine thought every time she had a damn nightmare or see's something devilish in the corner of her eye and starts to have a break down. And that one time Daniel's young niece drew her pictures of the sky when she was in the hospital. That was a living nightmare when Sarafine saw an angel fly across the page. She always wondered why her imagination was so screwed up always forcing her to have hallucinations. Sarafine came to the conclusion tonight that her mind just wanted to fuck her over again and again and again.
