Diane!

Leave Me Alone

Jean and her little daughter sat in my office. As far as i could judge , Jean is an elderly lady of about 48 and Avril her daughter about 11. Avril sits quietly on one end of the couch - far away from her mother- clutching her doll in one hand. She looks pretty calm as compared to any 11 year old who has been to a Psychiatrist's office , To be a little more precise , Mine!

Well by the sight of the mother and daughter I thought I pretty much knew the story Jean was going to tell me. That it would be like any other problem a 11 year old could have , not getting enough attention, not compatible with other siblings , but this was partially true. The story Jean told was a little different and it went like this -

"Good morning Doctor Grey , I'm Jean and this is my daughter Avril" She looks towards her daughter and says "Say good morning Avril".. But the girl replies quietly "I wont , I wanna go home. Diane does not like this".

" My daughter keeps talking to someone , But the only thing is I don't know Who? says the troubled mother. "She gets up screaming in the night.. Calling out to someone called Diane! And in a minute or so she calms down , smiles and silently goes to sleep without a fuss. The strangest part about all this is that. ,In our family and friends we've never known anyone called Diane! "

"She walks around the house as if holding someone's hand and talking to them. She sits all alone in school talking to the person she calls Diane. By her talks doctor , it seems as if talking to someone her age."

'When asked questions about school and her friends to work up a conversation all she ever replies is "Diane Knows , Ask Her! "

Okay, So Jean could you tell me when all this started? I mean since when did Avril start mentioning Diane's name?

I think this all started when we came back from a holiday . The day before we left , Avril had gone out with her brother and a few of her cousins. They had gone up to a palace located on a hill where one of her cousins told her the story of why that place was named after a particular king. They also told her of an accident that took place on that hill, where a car fell off and the family inside it died. Her cousin Bryce finished telling her the story... Bryce further told me that when he had finished she kept staring at the hill.

Avril then asked him a question which made him suspicious of her.

And what exactly did she ask her cousin Bryce?

She asked him that if a girl had died up there too?

What did he reply to this?

He told her he was not sure about that. He just knew that a family died up there.

What all did he say to Avril?

Hmm that's the story then. Well i dont think the story has anything to do with Avril's condition Okay continue then.. When Avril came home was there any change in her? Did she seem peculiar in her behaviour ?

Well I cant really say doctor. Avril is very moody. She came home in quite a temper. We asked her if she enjoyed her day out with her cousins. She assured us that she did. She looked very upset about something but wouldn't say what. She kept saying "how could they?" And when we asked her who is They? She didn't reply. She got up and Called " Mom I'm going out with Diane" and with this she left..

"Please doctor my child seems to be going crazy. Help her recover from talking to this fake friend"

"Im Not Going Crazy " shrieked Avril "And Diane is NOT fake.. I tell you she is sitting right here next to me" wailed the little girl.

Jean pulled the child into her arms sobbing." Please Doctor help my little girl.."

I was amazed at how the little girl fought back. How she was confident that a person named Diane existed. I was quite at a loss of words at this point. I felt sad for the little girl...

I wondered if she was a little psychic.. or if she was being haunted by a girl ghost , Cause all evidences and instances pointed to this direction only. I consoled Jean and assured her that we would come up with a solution to Avril's problem

I dismissed the session and asked Jean to meet me tomorrow with Avril in the morning. Jean thanked me and politely left with Avril who walked as if holding the hand of another...

After they left. i checked to see the video footage the camera in my office recorded..And in that Avril's Behaviour was very strange.. When she opened a bar of chocolate , she broke it in half and sort of let it drop onto the floor... She didn't seem to notice this though. It was almost as if she was sharing with her friend who she calls to be Diane. Her behaviour came back to normal again

And then again when she lost her temper when her mother had pulled her into her arms , it was like she was reaching out to Diane who she claimed , sat on the sofa! She kept her hand stretched out and only calmed down when her mother let go.

I was beginning to believe that Avril was being haunted by a girl ghost.

And then something seemed to prove that my belief was right. When Jean turned to leave with Avril, Avril turned around and stretched her hand out as if to take Diane's hand and then as it seemed like she had Diane's hand in her hand , she followed her mother out..

I was sorry for the little girl .Diane's friendship had affected her very badly. Then another thought struck me.. That if she was actually being haunted then there wasn't much I could do.

But I wanted to help this little girl.. cause this seemed a little more than just a little haunting.. I closed my laptop and wondered what was the actual problem affecting Avril!
