Goodbye (Inspired by 'Goodbye' by Miley Cyrus)

"I can honestly say you've been on my mind since I woke up today. I look at your photograph all the time."

It's nine o'clock and Thomas Müller checks his mobile for any messages or calls for the millionth time this morning, whilst staring at the photo of his boyfriend which acts as a wallpaper.

"I remember when we kissed. I still feel it on my lips. The time that you danced with me with no music playing."

Thomas remembers the passionate kiss that Miroslav had given him when they had won the 2014 FIFA World Cup when they were alone in their hotel room and touches his lips at the memory. He also remembers the slow dance that they shared during Philipp's wedding . Miroslav's eyes were like diamonds on that day, as were his own.

"I remember the simple things. I remember till I cry."

Every night, Thomas cries himself to sleep because he missed the Pole's touch and the way he used to hold him whilst watching a film or a good episode of Doctor Who. He misses the way Miro's eyebrows would arch every time Thomas asked him a million questions whilst reading the newspaper, as well as the way his nose would scrunch up every time Thomas tried to hug him whilst drenched in sweat.

"The memory I wanna forget is goodbye"

He remembers the anguish he felt when Miroslav told him he was leaving Munich to go to Rome. The departure at the airport was full of tears and Thomas's heart breaks all over again every time he remembers it, which is every day.

"I woke up this morning and played our song. And through my tears I sang along."

Thomas's alarm ringtone is 'Everytime we touch' by Cascada, which is better known as 'their song'. Everytime he hears it, which is every morning, he remembers Miroslav Klose and the dimples caused by the warm smiles that were given to Thomas when they wake up.

"I picked up the phone and then put it down. Cause I know I'm wasting my time."

Thomas has the urge to call Miroslav for the first time in three months. When he grabs the phone and is halfway through dialling the number, he realises that his other half could be busy in Italy, so he decides not to call. He ends up making breakfast and starts to read the previous day's newspaper whilst eating.

"Suddenly my cell phone's blowing up with your ringtone. I hesitate but answer it anyway. You sound so alone."

When Thomas is reading the political section of the newspaper, 'The Pheonix' by Fall Out Boy, the ringtone used only when Miroslav is calling, fills the silent room. Even though Thomas knows who it is, he still checks his phone to be safe. It really is Miroslav Klose. Thomas picks up with a nervous hello and Miroslav, supposedly the more mature of the pair, is bawling uncontrollably on the other end of the line. Thomas knows that something's wrong because Miro rarely cries.

"You said that your biggest regret, the one thing you wish I'd forget is saying goodbye"

Miro says that his performance at Lazio is bad, seeing that he's drinking himself to sleep every other night. The Pole says that he made his biggest mistake when he signed for the Italian club. Thomas is near to tears and begs him to come back to Bayern. Miroslav says that he can't because his contract is for two years. Thomas can't believe his ears. "Ask them to send you on loan to Bayern!"

"I've tried Thomas, I've given up. Tell me that you love me Mullie. At least I can die in peace that way." Thomas is shocked to hear this, even if his boyfriend sounds dead drunk.

"Don't you dare Miro!"

"Please Thomas. Let me die. I can't take it anymore!" the elder whines.

"Miro, don't. Just think what you're going to leave behind if you do. Basti, Lukas, Mario, Marco, Jerome, Sami, Manuel, Philipp and Mesut. And what about me?! You wouldn't do it if you loved me!"

"I can't stand - "

"I don't give a damn Miro! You always told me to never give up and to find a rational solution to your problems, yet here you are, drinking yourself to sleep and plotting your own death. I'm not having it. Get your backside to training. I'll speak to you when I get home from my training." As soon as they hang up, Thomas calls the hospital in Rome. He tells them that Miro is contemplating suicide and gives them his address in order to help him.

An hour later, whilst he's at training, Thomas receives a phone call and Pep Guardiola answers it for him. He's on the phone for two minutes and when he hangs up, he calls the man in question. "I'm really sorry Thomas. They found him unconscious in his flat. His wrists were slashed but his heart hadn't stopped. He's stable now, even if he's still knocked out. I suggest that you go home now, pack some things and hop on the first flight to Rome. He needs you more than ever."

**

Thomas walks into the hospital and asks for Miroslav Klose. The friendly nurse recognises him and guides him to the Pole's bedside, where he is still knocked out. He thanks her as she leaves him alone and Thomas reaches out to grab Miroslav's hand. The deadly silence in the room is disturbed by the sounds of his sobs. "Don't leave me Miro. Ich liebe dich." Thomas eventually falls asleep on the hospital chair.

When Mirosav Klose wakes up, the blinding light hurts his eyes. He takes a look at his wrists which are heavily bandaged and he has to blink five times when he sees Thomas asleep on what looks like a very uncomfortable chair. He tests his voice by calling for Thomas. The German's eyes flutter open and his lips break out into a smile from ear to ear. His eyes tear up as he takes hold of the elder's hand and he kisses him. "Miro, you scared the living daylights out of me, don't you dare do something that stupid again."

"Yes Mum," Miro says sarcastically.

"I'm serious Miroslav. You're only alive because I told the hospital people about your twisted plan. I did it because I love you."

"I love you too and thank you, for saving my life." Hot, wet tears flow freely down Thoams's face as he pulls Miroslav in for another kiss.

After they pull apart, Thomas says, "We'll get you out of Rome and back to Munich where you belong."

"That's going to be impossible Tom."

"Miroslav, seriously, if we could beat Argentina and win the World Cup and you beating the goalscoring record for the World Cup and Die Mannschaft, I'm sure we could get through this. Like one British man said, 'If at first you don't succeed, try and try again'. I've got faith in us Miro."

The couple hug and look at the sun, which is rising in the city of Rome and they smile at each other, knowing that the new day is going to bring something new for them.
