Pain.

That's all Edward Elric could feel. Pain, coursing through his veins, threatening to consume him as his vision blurred. He laid, staring up at the high ceiling with wide, almost lifeless eyes, blood dripping from the corners of his lips. The pain was so intense that it almost completely overthrew his other senses. He could faintly hear his brother calling out to him, and Envy laughing hysterically.

"Brother! Brother! Wake up, please! No.... Ed... Please!" Al was calling out to him, screaming, but it sounded like a whisper in Ed's ears. The sound of his slowing heartbeat was too loud. His eyelids drooped, and everything went black.

General Roy Mustang stood at the foot of the grave of his subordinate. The grave was plain. It did not have any fancy designs, or even say anything like 'beloved brother and friend'. Just a simple, dull gravestone stating the small blonde's name, and date of both birth and death. There was no body beneath the ground that Roy stood on- he had sacrificed himself to get his brother's body back, and had gone beyond The Gate.

"I wonder how everything is where you are... Or if you even are somewhere. Maybe you just, seized to exist once you passed through. Maybe your in another world, maybe even heaven" The dark haired man chuckled without amusement. "Alphonse still isn't convinced you're dead, even though it's been four years.... Stupid boy... You would be, what, 19? 20? God, how time flies." A tear rolled silently down his cheek.

"We all miss you Ed. Especially me. There's still a part of me hoping, praying, that you're still out there, alive and well, but..." He sighed. "Look at me, talking to a headstone, as if there really was someone there." He sat down and put his head in his hands, sobs wracking his body. He heard footsteps walk up the gravel path towards him. Someone put their arms around him. He looked up and saw Al's face. The General sobbed harder and threw his arms around the small boy. The boy was crying as well.

"He's still out there Roy, I know it... I'll get him back, I swear." Al whispered. "Until then, you have to be strong. Remember what Ed always said? You've got your own two legs. Get up and use them, move forward. Don't dwell on the past, General. Ed wouldn't want you to sit around crying over him instead of doing your job now would he?" He laughed a little.

"I guess not, but... It's hard Al. I miss him so much."

"I know, Roy. I know."

And with that, the two sat in front of that gravestone for hours, laughing and crying over all of the memories they had shared with the short tempered, hot headed alchemist, Edward Elric. That sat for what seemed like forever in front of that dull, plain, but oh so meaningful gravestone that marked the supposed death of the boy they had all loved so much.
