THE SHIFTER SMILED, SHARP TEETH GLINTING IN THE STREETLAMP'S LIGHT. Somehow, I wasn't afraid, the back of my mind registered the fear and panic my body felt, but my mind remained calm, like the ocean on a sunny day.
I was just walking home from a date with one of the cutest boys in my grade when I was stopped by this stranger by a quiet "Hello, there.". I now had the grave feeling that I was being compelled, but it was like only my mind and my heart could tell me what I should be feeling, that the calm facade was a phony wall created by this terrible creature who stood, inching closer while my eyes remained on him.
His face changed, the sharp teeth were gone, the deathly white skin and glinting coal-black had vanished and what was left was a beautiful boy, standing there. The smile had stayed though, malicious and wrathful. With no more than a foot separating, the most center part of my brain screamed for me to go. To run, to hit. To anything.
Oh, please, please, please do something! I tried to twitch, but my fingers remained loose and at my sides. It seemed like I was just a peaceful shell with a conscience. Nothing more, nothing less. I was certainly going to die. The thing grabbed hold of my shoulders roughly, pushing my head to the side, exposing my neck. He smiled and for a moment I prayed that he couldn't hear my heart pounding frantically, too fast. I've got about fifty seconds to live, if not less, I thought quietly. The serenity of my outside was now sinking into my disquieted inside. But it's alright... everything will be alright....
Something that felt like the tips of two knives brushed my skin. It tickled. I let off an almost blissful sigh as those two thin knives sunk into my neck. The pain was swift, causing nothing less than a drowsy wince.
"I like blondes best," he chuckled around my neck, tugging on the waving ends of my hair. I wanted to smile, but I found myself extremely sleepy. It wasn't a peaceful sleep, unlike my calm state of mind a few minutes ago, I could feel the dull pain of blood being drained from me, the tingling as I lost feeling of my legs. My heart beat started to slow, though it pounded loud in my temples and around my eyes. "They're the most fun."
I needed to stop the pain, do anything to stop him, this monster. This vampire. Slowly, oh, so slowly, my eyes started to close as my vision grayed and doubled. I felt myself hitting the pavement, a dull thud at the back of my skull. It should have hurt, but it didn't. Nothing hurt right now. I peered through my wet lashes at the vampire who stood over me, teeth bloody as he grinned down at me. Damn, was the last thought before I heard the loud, heavy thud, a scream. Then everything morphed from grey to black.
