Tris' POV
The halls were deserted as Christina dragged me to our Maths classroom. She explained that this was because all the other kids were in registration. She said that we would go to the office at lunch so I could be assigned to something called a 'Faction'. Apparently, there were five Factions: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. They all had different morals and different rules that made my head hurt when Christina fired them at me at one hundred miles an hour. God, this girl could talk for years! At least that meant I didn't have to talk. Then again, there wasn't much to talk about. I was just your standard shadow; a Plain Jane. The only exciting thing about me was that I'd moved here from Ohio, and even then that's kind of a let down.
Christina suddenly pulled me into a classroom without any warning. I tripped over my own feet and splatted on the floor. I heard a low chuckle coming from the front of the class and I quickly stood up, looking flustered. Christina, however, didn't seem fazed by anything that had just happened and her smile didn't falter once.
"Good morning, Mr Kang. This is Tris; she's new. Would it be okay if you signed us in for registration?" She asked cheerily. Our first lesson was Maths and she was acting like we had been given the next three months off school. Why was this girl so darn happy?!
"Of course, Christina." Mr Kang sighed wearily. As Christina showed me where our table was, Mr Kang turned his attention to me. "So, Tris...?" He asked.
"Prior." I told him nervously. Talking to teachers was never a strong point of mine. As I sat down in my seat, I pressed my palms into my knees to try to stop my hands from shaking.
"What brings you to Chicago High School?" He asked. As I was about to answer, Christina cut in.
"She moved here from Ohio. Her parents have new positions in their jobs and needed to move down here." Christina answers. I put my hand over my mouth and try to laugh quietly while not looking at Mr Kang's amused expression.
"Thank you, Christina." Mr Kang says sarcastically before I bring his attention back to me. "Prior... Why have I heard that name before?" He asks.
"My brother, Caleb, joined the boarding school near here a few years ago." I tell him. Caleb has always been our family's pride and joy. Mr Perfect could never do anything wrong as he went to a boarding school for super special children and he was the only person in our area to get excepted and blah blah blah. My dad made it very clear to his boss that if we had to move for work reasons, then we were moving closer to Golden Boy.
"Yes, Caleb Prior. He's done some amazing work. Great kid." Mr Kang says. I roll my eyes.
"Yeah, I see the universe doesn't want me to forget it." I mumble under my breath. I can feel Christina staring at me, so I turn to look at her. She looks confused and worried. Finally, she leans forward so Mr Kang can't hear.
"You're Caleb Prior's little sister?" She asks, astonished. I nod my head, afraid of what she's about to say. "You can't tell the others, Tris, okay? You can't even mention your last name." She says seriously.
"What? Why?" I whisper, looking at her like she's insane.
"Let's just say our group and your brother's group don't get along. And, in the nicest way possible, the boys in our group won't want to associate with a Prior." She stops as the class starts to file in and take they're seats. "If you don't want to be publicly exiled, stay quiet about it." She finishes and smiles as two boys approach our table.
One of the boys walks up to Christina and gives her a quick kiss before sitting opposite her. This boy has a pale complexion, curly, brown hair, and a musically orientated sense of style. He's wearing an Arctic Monkeys t-shirt, blue jeans, red Converse, and about ten wristbands with different band names on each one. He does a double take when he sees me, then looks back at Christina who just smiles even brighter. He holds his hand out for me to shake, which I do, before he sits in the seat opposite Christina.
