Part #2 : For the Days of Tomorrow are Closer than We Think

...

It was mid-afternoon & I had finally gotten up shaking off the remnants of sleep. I smiled too myself realizing what day it was, a new day. My last late night shift at the Waffle House was over my resignation taking effect & my good-byes said, it was all over. Now I was allowed to start my new life, I thought as I packed my tank tops neatly into my suitcase.

{BEEP} {BEEP}

I check my phone & see I've recieved a text from Leo.

-"Whatchu up to Kitten?"-

I smirked at his nickname for me and concluded that he was probably in the area because he only texted as an appointment maker, we talk on the phone, face to face, or skype more than text each other.

-"Packing, where you at?"-

{BEEP} {BEEP}

-"Down the street, can we come up.."-

He knows I could never say no to him, but he was with someone.

-"We? Melody?"-

{BEEP} {BEEP}

-"Yeah"-

Melody was Leo's girlfriend of about a month or so. She's pretty & stylish, but she & I quietly clashed a little too often. I think she doesn't like how close Leo & I are, or something like that.

Leo knows I don't really like her but at least he sees I try to get along with her.

It took me a minute to text back, he knew I was in great debate about allowing her in my apartment for a third time. The first time she was pretty quiet but that could be because Leo only came to pick up something. The second time, though, she couldn't keep her opinions to herself & literally had nothing nice to say. Complained about my decor and cleanliness questioned my clothing & intelligence, as if I weren't even in the room. That honestly gave me sour feelings towards her.

-" -_- sure."- was my dry reply.

I was hoping beyond hope that either Leo talked some sense into her or that she would just stay outside, in the cold.

I heard his cheery knock on my door almost as soon as I had sent the text. Apparently he also knows I can never say no to him. He let hisself in before I could leave my room. I saw the bitter look on Melody's face as Leo unhinged his key from the door.

I guess her staying outside was out of the question.

"Ellie!" Leo exclaimed before lifting me in a hug.

"Whoa, down boy," I exclaimed a little out of breath in the intense bear hug he was giving me.

"Hehe," he chuckled, "you know you love it," he said after letting me go & ruffling my hair.

One thing every guy should know, about this generations is: you never, I repeat NEVER, mess with a black girls hair. And I don't care if I had just woke up & hadn't even looked at my hair, for that matter, rules are rules. At least those are the rules if you're not Leo, somehow with me he get's away with pretty much everything. Yeah, I'm gonna miss this guy.

Eh," I reply, "so you guys came to help me finish packing?" I try my hardest to be nice to Melody by including her in the conversation, intending the question to be a joke. But my response from her was a rolling of the eyes and plop on my couch. She is so rude, I honesty don't see what Leo would see in her.

"Um, no," Leo interjected feeling the rising tension. "I just wanted to see you, I mean you're leaving soon, I gotta soak you up while I still have the chance," he says as he side hugs me, slily guiding me to my room. "Be back in a minute, Mel," he yells behind him with a sneaky half smile on.

That smile, however little it was vanishes when my suitcase comes into his line of vision.

"Aw Kitten gosh, you're really leaving," he says a little above a whisper.

"Well duh silly," I play attempting to lighten the mood. "but its not like I'm gonna be gone forever, 'sides if you're gonna get so down about it you could put your master's degree on hiatus & be my groupie for a year. I can see it now," I mused. "You & Melody wearing my face on your shirts & traveling back & forth from the states & Europe, cheering like fools when I do a solo dance. Or even trying your hardest to get backstage. Maybe get a job working as stage hands or even Melody becoming a janitor, all just to have some quality time with me," I ramble. We stare at each other for a moment completely straight faced right before cracking up in laughter.

"Yeah, Melody, that'll happen," he wheezes in between silent chuckles. "Gosh, I'm gonna miss you," Leo states after gaining his composure.

"That's true, you're gonna miss me so much," I smirk. "So much that sooner or later you will actually contemplate on wheather or not being a groupie is bad thing."

"Doubt it, though I do promise to come to a concert," Leo said.

"Well you can't help but do that, there's like 50 shows here in Atlanta alone," I joked, putting a few more folded items into my suitcase.

"Good, then I'll come to two."

Leo's phone rung in short burst signaling a text message, he read it fast and then there was a slight slouch in his demeanor.

"Mel's getting anxious I guess its time to leave," he doted.

"Good she can go," I snarked implying that Leo should let her leave.

He half smiled at my 'joke.' "Down girl, if I didn't know better I'd think she's rubbing off on you."

I fanned shock, "how dare you? Bye," I say then stick out my tongue. He walked out of my room and I followed.

"Oh yeah, just to make sure, is it still cool for me to stay with you after my lease is up here? I mean, I am prepared to make other plans if Mel is in your ear about how this is a bad idea," I say only for him to hear, in the hallway before we get to where she was in the living room.

"Yeah, don't worry about it," he says at a normal volume. "Let's see, today (Sunday) is the 27th, and your lease is over by the end of the month, I work on Thursday morning but I'll make sure Jason is here to help you start moving your stuff to our apartment," he continued.

"Yeah, you don't have to, I'll just text him. Knowing you, you'd probably wake him up when you leave for work & have him here before 10 knocking for hours," I say escorting him and Melody to the door. "He needs his sleep & so do I, its gonna be a long fun day Wednesday," I grin.

He just laughes, hugs me tight, then leaves down the hallway and turns the corner with Melody.

"See ya later Kitten," says his fading voice, the elevator doors closing, cutting off his far-well.
