Nikki was laying in her own bed. Finally, she thought, no more hospital walls. She had her own walls to look at and she could get up and move.

“Nikki, you have a visitor.” Her mother yelled from downstairs. “Okay, be right down,” She said,  getting up from the bed. It must be Dani, she was coming over today. She walked down stairs where her mother was standing, talking to someone, Dani probably, she thought. Her mother turned around, “Oh there you are, I’ll let you two talk.” She smiled and walked away, revealing Ashley. Wait, Ashley? She thought.

“H-hey,” Ashley said, clearly nervous. “Let’s talk outside.” Was all Nikki said and pushed Ashley out of her house onto the porch. She shut the door then turned to Ashley. “What are you doing here?!” She asked her.

“I-I just came to see if y-you were okay.” She responded.

“Can you just leave?” Nikki asked her, she didn’t want to deal with anything today, she wanted to relax and Ashley wasn’t making that any easier.

“O-okay.” Ashley said and walked quickly away. Nikki let out a breath of relief and walked back into the house and up to her room.  Even though Ashley was pure innocence, there was something about her that Nikki couldn’t place her finger on.

Jade finished her makeup and grabbed her purse and keys. “I’m leaving.” She called before opening the door and walking out to her black cadillac. She got inside and started the car.

When she got to school, she took a deep breath before walking into the school doors. It had been nearly 3 weeks since she was last here. She walked in and everything was suddenly quiet. All eyes were on her. She walked to class, head held high. Her black stilettos clicking on the floor with every step she took. She heard the kids whispering about her, but she ignored it. She could not show weakness.

She saw Courtney talking to some girls and when she looked over, she didn’t smile or wave. Nothing but a blank face. Courtney was the first to turn away. Jade walked past, angry and confused. They had known each other since 3rd grade and that had never happened.

She got to her classes and somehow made it through the day, seeing Dani once or twice. No Ashley or Nikki.

When she got home she did something she hadn’t done in a long time, she cried.

Courtney painted her nails a bright pink while watching her favorite tv show, Pretty Little Liars. Her phone started ringing, and she smudged her nail polish. “Damnit.” She said then put the phone on speaker, and answering it, “What?”

“Well hey to you too.” Donna, a girl she had befriended earlier that day, said sarcastically. Courtney sighed. “Sorry, smudged my nails.” “It’s fine.” Donna said. “So, did you hear? Jade totally broke down. And there’s a spot now for popularity.” Courtney thought for a moment. “Come over tomorrow 7:00 am. We’ll wear the sluttiest things I have.” She said. “Kay, see you tomorrow.” Donna said then hung up.

Courtney fixed and finished her nails, then went to her hair appointment. She had her hair trimmed and got side swiped bangs.

The next day, Donna showed up at her house 7:00 sharp. Courtney wore her pink crop top that said ‘cutie’ and high-waisted jean shorts with her pink heels. Donna wore Courtney’s purple tube top and jean shorts with black lace up heel boots that went to her mid-calf.

Courtney smiled at her reflection and said to Donna, “Ready?” Donna nodded and they grabbed their purses, got into Courtney’s car and drove to school.

They walked into school and all eyes were on them. People were gaping and staring at them in awe. Courtney smirked and took off her sunglasses and flipping her hair over her shoulder. Donna took her sunglasses, showing her piercing green eyes. She flipped her light brown hair over her shoulder.

Courtney saw Dani and gave her a small wave, unnoticed by others. Then she saw Jade. She was looking at Courtney, like the others, but with a different face. Almost...sad, hurt. Courtney just smirked at her and continued walking down the hall with Donna.

Ashley sat in her room, thinking. She couldn’t remember the night she was arrested, it was a blur.

She had this one memory that was crystal clear, someone handed her the knife. That was all she could remember.

And nobody wanted to talk to her, or even look at her. She tried to talk to Nikki that morning, but that didn’t go well. She hadn’t been going to school. Her mom said she could stay home and be home schooled or go back to that school. She hadn’t made the decision yet.

She had done some research in her time at home, and found out that the girl who was murdered was named Jamie Monnings, had a sister.

Dani sat in class, bored out of her mind, playing with a pencil. She felt a tap on her arm. She looked over at Aaron Wine. “What?” She asked him. The teacher in that class showed up twice a week, and didn’t show up today, so everyone could do anything as long as they stayed in the classroom.

“Well, uh- I was wondering if you- uh wanted to- um, go out tomorrow with, um, me?” He stuttered. Boys were afraid to ask Dani out, she was sort of off-limits since her last boyfriend. This was the first time in months she had been asked out.

“Um, sure.” She said. He smiled and brushed his hair out of his eyes and grabbed a piece of paper off his desk and gave it to Dani. “It’s my number. Text me later.” He said, and the bell rang.

She grabbed her purse and books and walked out of the classroom.

She was out of the school in minutes, heading to her house.

After she had texted Aaron for a while, they had a date planned the next day at the movies. Things were going good in Dani’s life.

She watched Dani from outside her window, and smiled. Her little date won’t go so well, she’d make sure of that. She carefully and silently walked away from Dani’s house.

She had things to do.
