Analeigh peered over the cement window frame, her eyes watching the hoard of black probes scanning the street.
"How long are we going to have to stay here?" She asked, turning around to face the other three.
"Depends how certain they are that we're here." Mingyu said, running his hands through his hair as his eyes remained on the screen of his makeshift computer. "The probes won't search a building thoroughly until they find a sign of life, and right now we're completely off the map. They shouldn't be here for too much longer."
"What do they want?" She had asked this question earlier, but they were interrupted by whatever had chased them through the streets of New York City.
"Us. Plainly us." May removed her eyes from the computer screen, looking up at Analeigh. "Remember the Eiffel Tower disaster? The so-called terrorists didn't want to destroy the tower. They wanted to destroy one of us."
Analeigh was silent. All of that for just one person. Who exactly were these people?
Seungcheol removed his gaze from the window, a smirk spreading across his face. "They wanted me."
"To kill you?"
"Yes, to kill me. And they think they did."
What?
"That's right," May huffed. "He's the most valuable one here."
A small laugh escaped Seungcheol's mouth. "I suppose so." He paused, for a second and then continued. "They knew I had a lead on who they really were. They wanted me dead, no matter what."
"Who's th-"
"The Enemy," Mingyu interrupted. "No one knows who they are. It could be anyone. All they want is to launch the world into self destruction."
"And three people are going to stop that..?"
May butted in. "Well, four now since you're here. And its not just us, the SCA is spread throughout the world. There aren't as many of us though, the Enemy is much larger- that we know."
A small beep emitted from Mingyu's computer.
"Our shield isn't going to last much longer. Soon enough we're going to start having to suck power from the city itself." The sun was setting, and Analeigh knew that without power the city would plummet into darkness. "Knowing the Enemy, that would be perfect circumstances for them to cause trouble-"
Seungcheol took in a sharp breath. "It's a trap."
Analeigh choked. "No matter what we do, something bad is going to happen.."
"If it's us or the city that has to go," May sighed, unhooking her gun. "Its us. It's our job."
Analeigh looked down at the matte black handgun on her belt. Earlier she had prayed that she would never have to use it. Tough luck.
She unclicked it, gripping it in her hand.
Mingyu and Seungcheol did the same.
Analeigh removed the safety lock, positioning herself towards the door.
Mingyu turned back to his gadgets, shutting them all down until one screen remained.
"Removing shield in three.. Two.." The air in the room stood still. "One."
Mingyu clicked a large button on his keyboard, and the remaining computer's screen went dark.At first it was nothing.
Four humans aiming their guns at the metal door, which didn't seem to be hiding anything.
Then it was all at once.
The door was peeled off its hinges, the metal glowing slightly at its edges from the probe's heat. They were searing- Probably overworked from searching for the four targets and trying to break Mingyu's tech shield.
Analeigh heard May yell over the high pitched noises the probes were radiating.
Seungcheol aimed his gun at the small glass lens sticking out the top of the dark metal probes, shooting it. Analeigh assumed that it was a camera. Whoever was behind the lens could see them.. Watch them. The thought sent shivers down her spine.
Everyone did the same as Seungcheol, aiming and firing their guns, more and more shards of broken glass littering the floor. Small circles on the left side of the probes swiveled and a small tube slid out.
Trouble. Analeigh knew it. Seungcheol thought the same. But they were cornered.. Weren't they?
Suddenly, Seungcheol yelled and everyone ran towards the window. He grabbed Analeigh's wrist, telling her to go.
Was this suicide?
He quickly wrapped his arm around her waist as they jumped out the top window of the cement building, leaving the floor of broken glass behind. She clutched onto him as they fell, fear with a hint of adrenaline coursing through her. The air rushed from underneath them as they raced along the concrete siding. She knew she would die. They would hit the ground with so much force they-
"It's okay." She heard a voice. "We're fine."
Analeigh opened her brown eyes slowly, recognizing Seungcheol's face.
Was this heaven?
All at once she snapped back into reality, her grip on his shirt tightening. Her eyes drifted downward and she realized they were standing on a short cement ledge protruding off the side of the building. She glanced upwards, noticing a thin gray cable leading up to the window.
I guess they aren't as suicidal as I thought. She told herself, thankful he hadn't decided to take her for a free fall.
Her eyes wandered to the other edge of the ledge, spotting Mingyu and May. An identical gray cord ran up the side of the building from where the two were.
Analeigh's face flushed as she realized how Seungcheol was holding her. Normally she would have backed away, but he made her feel.. safe.
"The probes can't shoot vertically," Seungcheol explained. "We should be safe until they realize they can't reach us."
Analeigh nodded. He still had his arm wrapped around her, preventing her from falling.
"Seungcheol!" May called, trying to peer over Mingyu's shoulder. "We can go further down; try to get out of here. There's a good chance the probes are stuck on trying to shoot us right now."
Analeigh agreed with this. Dark black bullets were flying out of the window of the top floor, soaring straight ahead, never to reach their target. There was a small noise after each one as the ammunition flew into the neighboring abandoned building. Who would be stupid not to have something that can shoot three-sixty?
Seungcheol replied to May, and then turned back to the girl in his arms. "Ready?"
"Just jump."
--
An image of four people spread across the screen. Two males, two females. The same short reel of footage looped over and over again, each one ending as a bullet appeared to hit the lens.
Scans were run over it, searching for the identities of the mysterious four.
Only one was found.
The other three in the picture were a mystery. Their faces were somehow blurred, the only one registering being the one on the end.
"Get me one of my best." A voice ordered, and the youngest ran to fetch him.
Moments later, a silhouette appeared in the doorway of the dark room. It slowly walked up to the large computer screen.
"I have a special mission for you."
Silence.
"Find this girl. Bring her to me."
"Her name?"
"Analeigh Rioux."--
