"Can I go out and play now?" I asked my mother.
"But there's no pups to play with?" She looked at me with a tilted head."I'll manage. I'm sure I can find a butterfly to chase." I smiled up at her. She smiled back, shook her head and sighed.
"Always staying positive. What did I ever do to deserve you?" She gave my ear a gentle lick before going on. "Go on. You can go play outside."
"Thank you mom!" I raced out the entrance of the den and almost ran into Sharpfang, a war-wolf for the pack.
"Hey watch it!" He growled."Oh! Sorry Sharpfang. Didn't mean any harm." I smiled at him and he rolled his eyes.
"Pups." he walked off and I trotted away in the opposite direction.Getting into a hunters crouch I slowly climbed up a nearby rock. When I reached the top I slowly peeked over the edge making sure I had targeted the right enemy.
Talon was seated right under the rock looking around the hollow and as he turned his head I ducked back so he wouldn't see me.
I looked back over making sure he wasn't looking before leaping onto his back playfully.
"Agh" Talon fell on the ground and smiled.
"Got ya!" I barked."Are you sure about that?" He grabbed me by the scruff and set me down on the ground. I lay on my back and laughed as he scuffles his paw on my belly.
This was our normal routine in Spirit-Pack. We were a pack of werewolves who had been forced to hide our secret behind every tree and in every bush. We lived in the forest next to human-dens.
Of course we had known they were really called homes or houses but we refused to use the proper names since to them we weren't humans. No, to them we were monsters.
Talon had been like a father to me since I had never known my real dad. My mother refused to talk about him so I rarely asked any questions.
All of a sudden as we were in the middle of our play fight, we heard the fearful howl of pack-mate's.
The hunting party raced through the entrance. The last wolf to enter was Flower, a beautiful, light brown, female werewolf and just before she had set paw in the camp a gun shot went off and her body fell limp on the ground.
Wolves started to race off in fear, anybody in human form transformed into a wolf and was racing around too.
My eyes widened in fear as I saw the first hunters at the entrance. Some war-wolves raced up to battle them while others tried to help the other wolves escape. I took a paw step back as I watched wolves being shot and netted.
"Go to your mother... Now!" Talon didn't bother to look at me as he said the words. He raced off to help other wolves. I obeyed him without question knowing even if I wanted to I wouldn't be able to.
I just raced into the paws of my worried mother who stood outside the den. She picked me up and tried bringing me into the safety of the den but was netted and was just able to throw me into the den.
"Hide Snow! Hide!" I reached out a paw to her as a human raced over. I backed up to the back of the den and watched in horror as it stabbed her with a needle.
Why was this happening? What would happen to me?
As the yelps and fearful howls died down, I slowly walked out of the den and looked around. My mother was still in the net and I couldn't tell if she was dead or asleep. Everywhere I looked I saw blood and the limp bodies of wolves.
