Breathe. Just breathe. Easier said than done. People are crawling over broken glass and screaming everywhere I look. Chaos is the only word to describe it, complete and utter chaos. People start shoving towards the front of the restaurant to escape the madness, but from where I sit, I can see a clear path to the back exit.
I can either take my fate into my own hands or leave it in the hands of a psycho criminal who belongs to the Mafia. Back exit it is. I gag while crawling my way through the restaurant over broken glass and is that a dead body?
About twenty men in black suits with guns come flying from the back to aid the others. I push open the employees only door in the back and make my way down the deathly, quiet hallway. I breathe out a sigh of relief once I approach the exit sign and push my way out into an abandoned alley. Where do I go now? I can't go back to my apartment and involve Tamara or anyone else I care about. Maybe I should've considered this before deciding to 'take my fate into my own hands.' Someone grabs me from behind causing a scream to lodge in my throat when a grimy hand covers my mouth. Why does this keep happening to me?
"If you know what's good for you, you'll stay quiet." A rough voice spits into my ear, sending shivers of disgust down my spine. I bite his hand.
"Ow! You bitch!" He screeches as he let go. Running as fast as I can, I round a corner only to be pulled back by my hair. Why the hair? It's so cliché.
"Let go!" I scream while slamming my heel onto his foot.
"Fucking bitch." He tightens his grip on my hair while curling an arm around my waist and turning us to face his little posse. "So, the bitch likes it rough, huh? I think we can live up to the challenge." He moves his hand down my body suggestively while laughing with his buddies.
"Hey! Shouldn't you be looking at one of your buddies for that?" I try unsuccessfully to hide my shaky voice as one of his hands grips my breast, and the other starts to travel dangerously lower.
"And why would I do that when I have such a fine piece of ass within my reach," he asks while moving the hand on my breast to my ass and squeezing for emphasis. I feel sick to my stomach.
Without giving him a response, I drive my right elbow back into his face before hearing the satisfying crunch of his nose. I donn't waste time sprinting back towards the restaurant exit with all of them hot on my trail. I have the door handle within my grasp but froze when I hear the cock of a gun against my head. Shit! So close.
"Turn around. I'm done playing games with you." Slowly turning around, I stare down the barrel of a gun, and immediately fear spreads through my veins like the plague.
"P-please just think about it. Let me go. I won't tell anyone w-what happened."
"That's cute. Except I can't let that happen since you've seen our faces. Say goodbye, princess." I close my eyes and wait for the life-ending bullet.
"Goodbye," says a familiar, deep, masculine voice from behind me before a loud 'pop' sounds in my left ear. Nico. Suddenly, I feel safer. I release a breath before opening my eyes. The guy who had touched me is on the ground holding his bleeding shoulder while his group is being held at gunpoint by who I assume are Nico's men. "Callie?"
I fist my hands to still the shaking as I turn towards Nico and offer a watery smile. "Guess I should have stayed put, huh?" My breathing was coming out harsh as I tried to regain my grounding.
Nico glances behind me before taking off his leather jacket and wrapping me in it. "Come on." He holds open the door and gestures me to go first.
Passing him, I mutter a quiet, "Thank you."
