I dropped everything.
I felt my heart plummet to the bottom of my stomach.
Those words replayed over and over again in my head.
"Johnny's been in an accident..."
~~~~~~
Johnny and I have been best friends for a little over a year now. We first met when he sat in front of me during English class.
"Hey there beautiful. Come here often?"
I just sat there, confused to why this weird guy was failing at his attempt o flirt with me. Sure, I thought he was cute. I still do... But that's beside the point.
"It's school, dumb ass. What do you think?"
He sat there stunned at my sudden response. With that said, we continued to glare at each other throughout the entire class period.
Surely after, I saw that he was in another two of my classes. I knew there was no way I would get rid if this jerk.
Over the next couple of weeks, we went from enemies to acquaintances, to friends, and it all led to our relationship that we had now.
Most people describe it as a "love-hate sorta thing" because we tease each other and use many insults to describe one another. But behind the scenes, we show a lot of compassion for each other. When we're alone, we act normal and friendly. Maybe it's to keep up the act, but I guess people jut don't understand how much we really care about each other.
But that's just us.
~~~~~
I ran through the hospital doors and found the receptionist desk. "Hi, I'm looking for Johnny Riveras?"
The receptionist just glanced up lazily, like she hadn't expected someone at this hour. Well obviously, considering it was almost 2 in the morning.
"He's in room 284."
Before I could even thank her, I ran to the elevator. "Great," I thought to myself. The only thing I hate more than hospitals, are elevators. So taking an elevator up the hospital floors was absolutely terrifying.
After stepping out of that death trap, I ran until I found the room. Warily, I stepped inside to find Gina, Johnny's mother, peacefully sitting on an armchair. When she saw me, he immediately ran to give me one of her famous bear hugs.
"Where's Johnny?" I asked her, worry ness dripping from my voice.
"Oh he'll be right back," she said. "I have to go fill some papers out, so I'll see you later dear." With that said, she left the room. As I was about to leave the room as well, a voice spoke up.
"Hey beautiful. Come here often?"
I turned around to find my idiotic best friend sporting a smirk on his face, as well as a small cut on his left cheek. Other than that, he looked absolutely unharmed. So.... I was pretty much worried for nothing.
"You can stop checking me out now, babe"
I did the only thing I could think of.
I went up and slapped him
... Right cheek, of course.
"I told you to stop calling me babe," I spoke.
"Owwww damn. You have sharp nails, Cassie. By the way, what's up with the fancy outfit?"
I suddenly remembered what I was wearing, and felt my cheeks heat up.
~~~~~
I was attending my stupid father's stupid business party and I was being forced to wear a stupid dress. It was a nice mixture of red and pink, and flowed all the way to the floor. It had jewels encrusted to form a nice belt around the waist, and I wore silver heels to match. My hair was curled beautifully and put up into a formal bun, with a few curly strands left to decorate my heart-shaped face. A bit of makeup, and I was all set.
When we arrived, I already had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. One of the sons of my father's friends suddenly came up to me, beckoning me to dance. Feeling the cold stare of my father, I sadly accepted. While dancing, I suddenly got a phone call from Gina.
When I answered, I was informed that Johnny had been in a car accident, and was currently at the hospital getting checked out for injuries.
And then.... Well you know the rest.
~~~~~
I guess Johnny could tell that I was embarrassed, so he tried soothing me with flattering words. But then, I remembered what I was here for. And suddenly, the anger rose up in me and I was ready to burst.
"YOU IDIOT!!!"
"I ran 2 miles in 3-inch heels while in this stupid dress, risking the wrath of my father for leaving a business client's son on the dance floor, just to find out that you're perfectly fine?!"
I could feel the rage running through my veins while I stared at his blank face. Then,
He hugged me.
Sure we've hugged a few times before, but never like this. I could feel his warmth radiating onto my bare shoulders. His hands rested on the small of my back gently, as my arms wrapped loosely around his neck for comfort. I didn't want to let go, but I then remembered my seething anger.
"Don't think that a little hug will stop me from kicking your bu-"
I was abruptly stopped when a warm presence overtook my lips. It was soft and gentle.
It was his hand.
I could feel the steam coming out of my ears when Johnny spoke,
"Cassie, you're amazing. I never knew that you did all that to come see me. I finally see how much you care about me, and I want you to know that I care about you too. A lot. More than you'll ever know, so please. Just shut up so I can kiss you."
And then, as his lips reached mine, fireworks exploded all over my body. I felt happy, peaceful, and content.
Our lips moved in sync as I thanked the thing that finally brought us together...
That one little accident.
