The sound of Chris' alarm was filling up his room, as the sunlight was forcefully making it's way through the small gap in his curtains. Being a light sleeper, Chris woke up almost instantly, stretching his arm out to grab his phone from his bedside table, hitting 'ok' to stop the deafening sound.
He groaned as soon as he realised it was his first day at college, his stomach turning upside down as he fully opened his eyes. He was nervous, enough to make him feel sick. If college was anything like school, he'd scream.
He sat up and brushed his messy fringe out of his face, drawing the curtains back before his mum came in to rant about how dark his room was. He climbed out of his bed and made his way into the bathroom, looking into the mirror above the sink.
They're going to hate you, laugh at you, push you around.
"Shut up!" He half whispered, but unfortunately loud enough for his mum to hear. "Christopher?" She called out from downstairs, "I made you breakfast so you wouldn't be late!" She added, Chris smiling at her thoughtfulness. He really did have a great mum, she always knew what to do if he was nervous, upset or scared. He'd have panic attacks quite a lot, and she'd always know how to help him.
"Okay, I'll be right down!" He called back, stepping away from the mirror and running out of the bathroom, downstairs to the kitchen. His smile only grew wider at the scent of his favourite breakfast. A bacon sandwich. Simple, but delicious.
He sat down at the family table, dragging his plate over to him before eating the sandwich, almost in one bite. His mum sat down beside him, a warm smile spread across her face. "Now, Chris. I know you're nervous, I was petrified on my first day, but let me tell you this- college is amazing. I know you're scared that it'll be just like school, but trust me, it's not." She paused and rubbed his back to calm his nerves, "You're going to make so many amazing friends, sweetie."
Chris waited to finish his mouthful, before looking over at his mum with a trusting, but still fearful look, "Promise?" He spoke, his voice almost cracking due to his eyes tearing up ever so slightly. Talks like this were so calming, but still, they wanted to make him cry. "I promise, you'll be fine. Now eat up." She replied, standing back up to move the used dishes and pots into the sink.
As soon as he finished eating, he moved himself from his seat, "Thanks, mum." He made his way back upstairs and into his room to get changed. He let out a sigh of relief, he didn't have to wear uniform. No itchy blazer, no neck-choking ties, and no fancy shoes. He picked out his favourite shirt, which had 'The walking dead' written at the top, with a herd of walkers printed onto the shirt below the text. He swapped out of his pyjama shirt and into his clean shirt, before grabbing a clean pair of boxers and jeans, slipping out of his pyjamas bottoms and boxers, into the fresh pair and jeans.
He carried his worn clothes into the bathroom, throwing them into the wash bin for his mum to sort out. He grabbed his toothbrush, adding a small amount of toothpaste onto it, before brushing his teeth for just over a minute. He hummed to himself as he did so, before wringing his mouth and toothbrush, putting it back. He grabbed his hairbrush and examined his hair, before quickly brushing through it to make it look somewhat decent.
After doing so, he went back into his room to put on socks, some deodorant and his bag, before making his way downstairs, his mum already standing at the front door.
"Ready to go?" She asked with the same heart warming smile. Chris smiled back and nodded, following his mum outside and into the car. The whole journey was painful, he was getting more anxious as every minute passed by. After a 15 minute drive, they were there. "Want me to come in with you?" His mum asked. As much as he wanted to hold her hand throughout the whole day, he needed to do this himself, to make her proud. "No thank you, I can do this. Thanks for driving me." He replied as he took off his seatbelt, before leaving the car.
His mum waved as she drove off, leaving Chris in front of the building. It was small, not tiny, but smaller than most other colleges he'd seen. But the sight of many students walking inside made his heart drop, but he inhaled deeply and made his way into the building.
"It's going to be okay, Chris, you're going to make lots of good friends here." He whispered to himself as he pulled his timetable out of his bag. "Room 3.14 for graphics." He read out, before making his way up the stairs to the third floor, to room 3.14.
He saw a few people waiting outside the room, none of them were talking to each other, they must've all come from different schools. He walked to the door and stood beside it, next to a boy with pitch black hair, almost the same style as his own. He had big blue eyes which were just looking at the wall opposite them, and he was humming rather loudly.
"Hi there." The boy spoke, making Chris jump. "My name's Phil, what's yours?" He spoke again. Was Chris dreaming? Someone was actually talking to him, and on the first day. He tried to keep calm, finally deciding to speak up, only to be overtaken by a sea of stuttering. "H- My name's Ch-..Chris, uh, well- hi."
Great, good going Chris, you look like a complete moron.
Phil smiled widely at Chris, before turning when the teacher arrived, unlocking the door to allow the students to get inside. Phil pushed himself away from the wall he was leaning against, making his way into the classroom with Chris following closely behind. Was he being too clingy already? All he did was say hi to Chris, gosh, don't look too obsessive.
All of the students took their seats, them all spacing out from each other. "Okay, hello guys. My name is Kate, and I'm your graphics teacher. I know you must all be nervous, but I can assure you that this place is nothing like school-" Chris felt a huge weight being lifted off his shoulders. If the teacher says it's nothing like school- it's nothing like school. "-we're not here to treat you guys like five year olds, we will treat you like adults, with respect. Now, tod-"
Kate was interrupted by the door being pushed open in a rush, only for a student to stumble in whilst catching their breath. "Sorry I'm late, miss."
