Sophie's POV

Light seemingly streaked into my eyes as they opened. I couldn't feel much at first, just a hand in mine. I had to wait a few moments for all of my senses to start working in sync again.

The light was too bright. All I could hear was the drumming of blood in my ears.

I could just make out a shape next to me. Slightly long black hair. Slightly overgrown facial hair. Staring straight at me. When my eyes started to work, I noticed the person was saying something.

"Chica? Chica can you hear me? Chica are you okay?"

I couldn't say anything. I tried to lift my arms but a burning sensation made me out then straight down again.

"No, Chica. Don't move, just stay still, I'll call for a nurse"

My brain connected as I began to recognise the face of my companion. Carlos.

"She's just woken up"

"Hello, Sophie. I'm the Doctor who specialises in burns and burn related illnesses. Now, it seems as if you went into septic or toxic shock. Your left arm burns are significantly worse than the right and are infected. We'll show you how to bandage them up later so that we can send you home, okay?" He said, looking bored.

"That's fine" I croaked, my throat feeling like sandpaper.

Carlos looked at me, his eyes like a sad puppy's.

"I'll go get you some water" he said, not giving me a chance to say anything. He ran off towards the waiting room but I could see him rubbing his eyes. He returned a few minutes later with red eyes. He raised the plastic cup to my lips and gently tipped it, letting me take small sips for a moment.

I looked down. I was covered in bandages.

"I-" Carlos said as a nurse came bounding in.

"Hello! I've been instructed by your doctor to show you how to clean and dress your wounds" she smiled almost a little to enthusiastically.

I smiled back at her, not knowing what to say.

"So, if your boyfriend wants to watch too, just in case he wants to help then he can"

Carlos ran his hand through his hair before looking down at me.

"So you're just going to gently take off the bandage, give it a good bathe in the antiseptic we'll give you and then replace the bandages and you're as good as new"

"Thank you" I smiled.

"Have you got any clothes with you?" She asked, standing in the doorway.

"Yeah, Carlos brought some"

"Great. If you want to go and get changed in the toilets then you can go home"

Carlos didn't try to talk to me. He put an arm around my back to help me up. He gave me a shy smile as I walked to the toilets with my bag.

We didn't talk much in the car. It was awkward. If the nurse hasn't have burst in when she did I'd have known what he wanted to tell me.

When we got home I disappeared into our room to start packing a bag for China. We were finally going to announce our relationship by showing up at a race together.

Carlos' POV

I walked into mine and Sophies room to find her packing her suitcase for China. Both her arms were covered in bandages. I knew it was my fault that she could have died. I knew it was all my fault.

I dragged my full suitcase in and put it by the bed. I looked over at her before sitting down. She turned around and looked at me before sitting next to me.

I shuffled a little closer towards her. After a few awkward moments she threw her arms around me, hugging me close and tight.

I felt her tears on my arm. What I'd put her through was traumatic.

"Chica, hey Chica it's okay, it's my fault. I should have revved the engine that much. I shouldn't have let you stand there knowing the engine would blow"

"It's not. I shouldn't have gotten rid of the baby without consulting you first. It was stupid idea powered by advice from a child"

"It wasn't. You're right. I don't know why I'm so hung up on starting a family. We're both so young. We need to have our careers and lives first"

I tried to speak but a few tears fell down my face.

I woke up at the alarm that morning. I was happy to be going to China with Sophie. We needed to announce our relationship to people. I felt we would be happier that way. I took a look at her sleeping next to me. I had no choice but to wake her up. After all, it would be her first Grand Prix experience.

"You ready? It's not that long of a flight but it's long enough. Are you excited for the weekend?" I asked her.

"Reasonably. I mean, it's my first experience at a race but I've seen the crowds on tv"

"You don't have to leave the garage if you don't want to. You can stay with me. I'll have my arm firmly around you so that you don't get knocked. I want you to be safe, Chica"

"I love you Chico" she smiled at me.

And we were on our way to our first race together.
