The lazy afternoon sunlight shone down through the rustling leaves, scattering warm patches of light across the otherwise dark forest floor. Charlotte and I walked on until we reached a clearing up ahead, where we stopped to rest in the soft grass, beneath a large isolated tree.
I gazed at the clearing surrounding us, taking in the scattered purple violets and the clear, cloudless sky above. It was much cooler under the tree and for some odd reason I felt that uncomfortable feeling of being watched. To distract myself from this sudden notion, I turned to my best friend Charlotte, “This is a pretty cool place.”
“I know, it seems almost magical, even spooky,” so she had felt that same feeling too!
“Yeah, spooky and enchanted!” I laughed, resting back on my two hands as I let my head flop upside-down, staring at the dark tree’s trunk. A sudden glimmer of red caught my eye. I instantly flipped my head upright and scrambled up to the trunk.
“Hey Charlotte, come see this,” I called back to her, not turning my head away from what I saw. Charlotte reached my shoulder and an unmistakable hush fell over the entire clearing.
“But I’ve heard of this before,” she whispered. “Oh my gosh Alana! The story’s true!” She let out a quiet gasp.
“What? What are you talking about?” I asked her, turning to search for answers in her dark brown eyes.
“Okay, I’ll tell you the story,” she said quietly as we both turned back to what we saw. A beautiful heart had been carved into the tree’s hard surface, etched in so deeply that you could run your finger in the outline. But what was most unusual about it, were the specks of red glitter inside the shape, for they were the bold, bright red of fresh glittering blood.
“It all began with a young man who lived in this very same forest,” Charlotte began mysteriously. “He had a large tree that was sprinkled with shimmering, silver glitter…” She continued on to tell a haunting tale.
Xavier was a man who appeared to be in his late teens. He protected a tree but not just any tree, an enormous, special tree dusted with silver sparkles, a tree that was haunted by Whisperers. Xavier wasn’t exactly human. He was marked with a single, glittering leaf on the inside of his wrist and as long as no one ever harmed this mark, he would forever live.
People had heard many stories of the man with the Whisperers. For wherever Xavier went, the sound of voices whispering followed. If anyone came across him, he captured them, binding them to the tree and their voices became one of the many Whisperers.
There was a small village situated close to the forest that contained this magical tree and everyone of the village was warned about the dangerous man sighted within. The forest was said to be haunted and apart from the trained hunters, everyone was told to stay near the edges, for their own safety.
Faith, a young sixteen year old girl with long, dark hair and fair, porcelain skin wandered into the forest one day. She carried a straw basket and wore a thick cream coat. Faith hummed merrily to herself as she scanned the bushes around her, searching for edible berries to bring back to her family. She spotted a patch of blueberries a little further in and hurried over to them, eager to please her mother with the fresh berries. In her haste, Faith tripped over a stray stone and fell to the ground before the bush, sprawling the few berries she had already gathered to the forest floor around her. Sighing, she returned the berries back to their basket and reached forward to collect the blueberries. Just as Faith’s slender fingers closed around the bundle, a murmuring voice faintly reached her ear and she turned in surprise, her dark eyebrows raised.
