CHAPTER 1

Arghhhh. "This is it. Take a deep breath Nad. You can do this!" I tightened the hold on my passport as I walked nervously towards the massive plane in front of me. It was my first time boarding an airplane and to make it even scarier, this plane will be carrying me all the way to South Korea. To say that I was slightly nervous was an understatement. I was sweating like a pig and there was nothing besides the thought of my parents who put tonnes of hope on me, that could calm me.

Why was I heading to South Korea? Oh, sorry let me explain that bit to you. I was nineteen, and I was going to further my studies in electrical engineering in South Korea. At the moment, I had just completed my 9-months Korean language and culture preparatory program at a local college. Honestly, at first I slightly despised the idea of going to Korea to further my studies. I mean, I could still study engineering in local universities but my father wanted me to study abroad, so I had no choice back then as my sponsor only sent their students to Korea for electrical engineering. Yes, I got a scholarship, I'm not that dumb. I remembered I was a total mess when I first started studying Korean language. It was my friends that helped me a lot by introducing me to everything about Korea, mainly about K-pop. I started to tolerate K-dramas, variety shows and K-pop music as I found them very entertaining, and as a bonus I got to sharpen my Korean as well. To say that I was fluent in Korean was an overstatement, but eh, it was still better than nothing huhu.

I unbuckled my seatbelt as the symbol for the seatbelt was turned off. It had been approximately 6 hours after the flight departed from Malaysia. I looked out the window and gasped as I took in the breathtaking night view of the Incheon International Airport. Suddenly, I was hit by a wave of sadness. "I can definitely do this. Think of all the adventure you will face here! It will be fun." Sighing, I grabbed my jacket and stood up to join in the queue to exit the plane. I caught the worried glance my best friend, Jen, had been giving me since we arrived here. I knew she was worried because I had never been away from my family this far. Even when I was in college before, I went home almost every weekend since my family lived quite near to the college. Sending her what I hoped to be a convincing 'I'm okay' smile, I tangled my fingers with hers to gain some strength.

"Nadine, you okay? You look a little pale," Adam, one of my best buddies I met in college also noticed my 'problem'. "Hey Adam," I smiled, "Yeah I'm fine, just tired. This is my first time flying, remember?" Adam and Jen probably the only people I opened up to about my life, since, well since forever. I was friendly and made many friends, but I never felt comfortable opening up to anyone until I met them both, last year. They were the only people that I think understood me better than me myself, other than both of my parents. They were that important to me. So yeah, they were practically my family.

~.~

"So you girls, Jennifer and Nadine, am I right?" Jen and I nodded. "You two will be roommates together as stated here on the list, and here are your keys. The bathrooms are at the end of the corridor of your room. Just walk straight to the right side. The pillows are in the lockers over there. Hmm, I think that's it. My room is two doors down to the left so please let me know if you need anything okay?" Amy smiled as she close the door to our room. From the airport, we were brought straight to the university where we will be studying. From there, the staffs guided us to our dormitories provided by the university for the first years. The orientation will only begin in a week. I sighed in relief at the thought of that. We could rest tomorrow and maybe do a little bit of sightseeing around the campus area.

"We got the whole week to get used to this place. Sweet!" Jen grinned sweetly at me. I joined her on the couch and looked around our dorm. It was just nice and big enough for the two of us. There were two single beds located opposite each other, two medium size lockers at the end of our beds, a couch and also two study tables and chairs. It was quite plain and dull, but maybe me and Jen could figured out something to make the dorm looked cosier. Besides, we would be staying here for the whole year so I didn't think I could stand living in a dull, lifeless place.

I reached for my phone that I put in the pocket of my skinny jeans. After unlocking the lock screen, I quickly connected my phone to the Wifi provided by the Uni. I hadn't buy local phone number yet, so it will be better for me to Whatsapp call my mom. I made a mental note to go out and get a new number later.

After chatting with my mom for about 10 minutes, I plugged in my phone to its charger as I walked back to my bed. I jumped onto my bed, my body feeling a little bit sore from all the travelling as sleep started to consume me.
