Brandon's POV:
When the bus comes to a stop, Callie looks out the window and stands up. We get off of the bus and walk for a long time in silence. I don't know where we are going and we aren't in the greatest of neighborhoods so I stay close to Callie. I know I have a girlfriend and I just met Callie, but I feel really protective of her and I don't really know why.
After a really long walk we end up at a really small and junky looking house. Callie lived here? "You lived here?"
"Yeah. Could you just go knock on the door and keep the man that answers it busy while I get my brother?" I nod. We both take a deep breath and then start our tasks. Callie goes to a back window and I go to the front door.
I knock and after a moment a man answer. "Hi um, I'm kind of lost and was wondering if you could tell me where the transit station is."
"You must be pretty lost because it's more than three miles from here."
"Yeah I really don't know where I'm going." I say as I see Callie tip toeing to the kitchen. "Could you give me some directions to get to the station?"
"Yeah so you go..." He leans out the door and starts pointing in directions, but I'm watching Callie from the corner of my eye. The man must have seen her too because he turns around suddenly and starts yelling at her. "YOU? GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!"
"Please just let me get Jude and we will leave."
He starts stalking towards her and grabs her arm. I cant handle it. I have these mixed emotions of fear and anger. I run up behind the man and grab his shoulder, pulling him back. "Don't touch her! Get away from her!" I say. He looks at me and let's go of Callie, but then pulls a gun from the drawer in a near by desk. He points it at Callie. I feel helpless there is nothing I can do. We're all yelling now, I'm yelling at him to please put the gun down, Callie's yelling at him that we will leave, and he's yelling at both of us to get out of his house. I can't let him hurt Callie, but I don't know how to protect her because he is in between us.
Then my mom and dad come from no where with their guns out and pointed at the man. For once it's helpful having parents that are cops. My mom is behind Callie and my dad is behind me. Callie runs to the boy in the kitchen and I step out of my dad's way. I watch Callie's face light up and she smiles as she hugs Jude tight. I can see why she's so protective of him, he's pretty scrawny and looks to be about 11 or 12.
Mom and dad get the man on the floor and get his gun away from him. My dad tells me to go outside and wait in the car. I take one last look at Callie and Jude and then do as I'm told. When i get in the backseat, Mom (Lena) says, "never do that again Brandon. Never."
"I'm sorry mom, I really am. It's just Callie was going to come alone and wouldn't let me call mom. I'm sorry."
"I know why you did it Brandon, but you can't just not show up at home and not answer your phone. That man had a gun. If we wouldn't have gotten here..."
"I know mom and I'm really sorry, about worrying you and missing the contest. I know we could have really used that scholarship."
"We will figure something out. I'm just glad you're safe." Then Jude gets in the car and soon after Callie. She looks at me, smiles, and mouths "thank you." Then she kisses the top of Jude's head. I smile back and nod.
My dad opens my door, great here it comes. "That was really stupid B." I nod. "If your mom doesn't kill you when you get home, I will." I nod again. "I love you B."
"Love you too." He quickly kisses the side of my head and then shuts the door. I glance at Callie and the Jude from under my eyelashes. They share the same expression and I know that no one has ever, or at least in a very long time, said to them what my dad just said to me.
