The woods immediately called to me, being outside hidden from site always appealed to me. I lifted my face into the cool night breeze and sighed contently; I was home. The thoughts of the new argument me and my mother had made me clench my fists and pick up my pace. Well, so much for a soothing walk.
"You're gonna thank me one day, please don't be angry at me; it was the best choice I could make."
How did uprooting from where we've lived for years back to Illinois be a better choice? The life me and my single mother had in Wisconsin was just fine up until a few weeks ago. A few nightmares and blackouts here and there and she up and leaves Wisconsin, dragging me with her. Another cool breeze wafts through the clearing I was standing in the middle of'; blowing a few strands of golden brown hair across my face. I pushed the pieces back and nestled into the over-sized band hoodie I threw on before storming off into the backyard that connected to a trail that ran into the woods. Restlessness coiled in me and forced me to walk further into the trees, too wrapped up in my own thoughts I did not notice how the trees were getting thinner and eventually, leading me into a big open field. The grass was definitely overgrown, but the bright night sky shone down on it and made it beautiful.
A whistling distracted me and I whirled around. Right on the edge of the tree shadows was a tall boy. His black shirt showed off his built arms and dark jeans encased his long legs.
"Who are you and what are you doing lurking in the shadows?" I snapped and took a step backwards. The fine hairs on my arms and the back of my neck stood up to attention as goosebumps flashed across my skin.
"You don't know yet?" Shouldn't I be asking what a feisty lone she-wolf like you is doing out here all alone?" He stepped more into the moonlight and I almost gasped when I saw his face. Sharp cheekbones that were covered in slight stubble cut across his face, a straight nose that led up to piercing dark almond shaped eyes. There was a wicked, heated look in those dark eyes and his unruly black hair suited him; I felt like I've known this face forever.
I took a step forward. "Who... tell me who you are." Then I caught what he had said. "She-wolf? Isn't it supposed to be cupcake or sweet cheeks?" I raised an eyebrow and crossed my arms while trying not to pay attention to my racing heart. Or the fact that all I wanted was to throw myself at him and see if he could cool down this feverish feeling that was encasing my whole body.
His eyes roamed over me slowly and I shivered. "Hmm, you have no clue yet, which makes this all the more difficult on my end." His deep voice sounded a little hoarse. I got a hint of bonfire smoke mixed with a sweet earthly smell.
"Know what? I involuntarily took a step toward him, I wanted to see how his full lips felt against mine. Frowning, I shook my head to clear it and locked my legs together to keep from drifting any closer to the stranger a few feet in front of me.
He laughed and circled me, his face predatory as he came closer. Suddenly, I felt like a baby lamb that was on the slaughtering block but didn't know it until it was too late. I noticed his arms were defined and muscular, with a tattoo that run out from underneath the sleeve of his shirt. I could make out black ink, but the details were a bit hazy since light was limited out here. "That you, Darling, are my mate."
I stared at him, efficiently stunned. "Mate? Like I'm an animal? You gonna start peeing on me now or something?" I crossed my arms and tried to bite back a smirk playing around with my lips as I took a step back from him. Something in me longed for this stranger, and made me a little shaky. My very bad habit of smiling when I got too nervous was starting to take over my face.
He smirked back as if the idea wasn't half bad and cocked his head. "How do you not feel it? I know you do, just tell me your name sweetheart." He sniffed the air and a small shiver ran through him, his nostrils flared.
I figured there was no harm in giving out my name. "Sarena, you're turn," I nodded at him expectantly. Trading names was hardly a bad thing, there was no way he'd get my last one and considering I was new here nobody knew of me yet. If he had any funny ideas about tracking down my house and sneaking inside to kill me in my sleep, he'd have a hell of a time finding me.
He smiled at the sound of my name and a shot of warmth ran through my veins to see that smile; the palpated beating of my heart was starting to seriously concern me.
"Cole Redburn, I like your name, Sar." Before I could even blink he was in front of me, grazing his fingertips across my cheekbone. His fingers left trails of warmth and it took everything I had to not lean my head into his hand.
My heart started to convulse at his touch and the fact that Cole just moved at a extremely abnormal speed. "What, how did you-" This was definitely proof that I was just as abnormal, my basic instincts were to not run far, far away from him; they were to stay exactly where I was and beg for more contact. I was officially sick in the head, no diagnose needed.
"Shh," Cole dominated my space and leaned down to me, a good two heads taller than my average height of five foot six, and buried his nose in my hair. Black spots started to fill my vision as I heard a howl in the distance.
Cole groaned when I did what felt right and leaned into him. "Mine," The word just formed in my mouth. I knew that whatever just happened was not a fluke, and somehow Cole was connected to me or my past. I would bet my entire being that he was the key to something that I was missing. I tried focusing on that rather than the huge swelling, possessive streak that was hammering through me at the moment.
I heard a snarl come from the shadows a few feet behind him. "They're coming," He sniffed the air again and looked behind himself; raising his eyebrows when he looked back down at me with shock in his eyes. "You, you're David's daughter. That's why you're so shocked baby." His eyes were a dark violet color, unique but I felt like it suited him. Even thought he was a complete stranger, get it together Sarena.
I frowned. "How do you know my dad's name?" My arms raised and wrapped around his neck and tingles shot through me. My body wasn't my own, I felt like I was standing outside of it.
Cole chuckled and leaned back down. "Let's just say... our families are familiar with each other. And now, before they come and interrupt us, I'm going to kiss you Sar." But he didn't get to because as soon as his lips brushed against mine something exploded through the trees and I blacked out with a million questions on the tip of my tongue.
