O N E
I never liked Mondays. Or Tuesdays. I hate every day in a week. And today isn’t an exception.
I woke up with a start—on an afternoon. In the middle of the class. I stretched and rubbed my eyes, before checking my wristwatch. It’s already 3:47 pm. Well, what a shock. Only 13 minutes to go, and I can finally go home.
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
“Impressive Fule! Absolutely stunning!” our happy teacher exclaimed, a little too dramatically. He’s really happy, if you could find a synonym. Hope you catch my drift.
I sighed inwardly and decided to look at the girl who delivered the lines. Her cheeks blushed slightly as our teacher complimented her. I guess she could never get used to it, even though it happens almost every day.
She flashed a shy smile, which added to her charm. “T—Thank you, Sir.”
Our teacher, Sir August as he would like us to call him, returned the smile. “So, there we have it! Our Juliet for the play. No other than Haruka Fule!”
The class had different reactions. Most clapped and cheered, girls and guys alike. Mostly guys though. Haruka’s admirers, I assumed. She has a load of those. Some groaned. I guess they wanted to have the role. But who could beat Haruka?
She’s almost the epitome of perfect. Beauty, brains, talent- you name it. She has it all. You’d almost think girls like her don’t exist.
I just locked my gaze on her. She’s the most interesting person in the room after all. Her eyes wandered around, and when she met mine, her eyes widened. Why? I didn’t know.
I remained unfazed. She played with her chocolate brown hair, looking nervous. That was normal. But then I noticed her cheeks turned redder, if that’s even possible. Now that was not.
Am I making her uncomfortable? I thought. I shrugged and averted my gaze. I didn’t want a classmate to pass out because I looked at her.
“Now for our Romeo, any want who would like the role?” Many guys raised their hands. Only one or two looked like they really wanted the role. The rest? They obviously just wanted to be with Haruka.
I just placed my earphones on my ears and played a song to kill time. Only a few minutes left. I closed my eyes and stretched for a bit.
And then, silence.
That shook my curiosity. My eyes flew open, to see everybody looking at me in surprise. It really is uncomfortable when people stare at you. I took a note of that one.
I noticed that nobody was raising their hand anymore. This is getting weird.
Sir Agustin- or Sir August scanned the classroom. He looked pretty shocked himself. After a long pause, he spoke. “I guess it’s settled… then.”
My eyebrows shot up. “What’s settled?”
I shouldn’t have asked that.
“Our Romeo would be you, Ethan Alcantara.”
