Sensing that her father would be home soon, Mari grabbed the first book off the shelf; before she could take a look at the cover, the book got slapped out of her hands.
"Mari! Did I give you permission to read any of my books?" scolded her father.
"No, Father. I could not help myself. My curiosity seems to have gotten the best of me today," answered Mari.
"I will not punish you this time, Mari. If this happens again, you will be punished," warned her father.
"Yes, Father."
"It has been a long day, Mari, fetch me some of those treats Chef baked earlier."
As he turned to leave, Mari asked, "Father, why do you never let me read any of your books?"
He paused and looked her in the eye.
"Because, Mari, those books contain things you should never know."
After his final words, Mari's father left her alone in his library. Mari waited a few moments before she picked up the book and examined its cover. Ignoring her father's warning, she opened the book to page one.
Her father returned moments later to find Mari lying on the floor with the book in hand. Quickly, he checked her pulse and felt a strong thumping underneath his fingertips.
"Stupid girl, did I not warn you?" cursed Mari's father. Immediately, he picked up Mari and carried her to her bed where she lay in a comatose state.
Five weeks later, Mari died.
