                                Riley

After finishing the five cupcakes I had ordered, I decided to go home.
Walking out of the bakery I noticed a dead bird on the ground. I nearly cried because of this, so I took out a napkin I had left over and threw it overtop of the depressing, lifeless animal.
I walked home, looking at the flock of birds flying south for the winter.
As I got to the apartment, I unlocked it and stepped in.

Home.

I spotted my mom cooking as Auggie complained about being hungry.
I tried to ignore him as I walked towards my room.
"Riley, Riley, can you make me food?" My brother asked impatiently.
"Sorry, Auggie, I'm busy." I answered.
He groaned and went back to fussing with my mom.

I walked into my room, noticing a familiar blonde sitting at my window.
"Wow, you actually came." I joked.
Maya laughed. "Well, I'm desperate!" She joked along.
I sat next to her, looking her in the eyes. "Why do you keep coming, when I keep frustrating you?" I asked.
Maya bit her lip. "Well, ya' know, there's no universe where we weren't together." She giggled. "But, seriously, I'd never give up on you." She answered. I smiled. "You're so sweet, peaches." I said, tilting my head.
"How can you not be sure." Maya blurted out.
A confused look spread onto my face.
"What are you talking about?" I asked. Maya took a deep breath. "How could you not be sure if you feel the same way about me that I do about you?" Maya exclaimed.
She was blinking constantly, the gesture she always uses whenever she was agitated.
"I'm confused, Maya. I just want you to be happy, but how can I do that if I'm not sure if I'm telling the truth about my feelings or not?" I answered. Maya sighed. "I'm sorry, I've just lost my patience." She explained. I nodded.
"I've just felt like this since the sixth grade, and I just want you to feel the same way." She said.
I opened my mouth to speak, but before I could, Maya climbed out of the window.

Bummer.

"Dinner!" I heard my mom call.
I walked out to the dining room, remaining quiet after Maya's flee.
We both sat down at our regular seats, suddenly hearing the door slam.
My dad walked in angrily. "Fifty bucks, Topanga, fifty bucks!" He exclaimed, waving around a piece of paper.
"For what?" My mother asked.
"This stinkin' house." He answered. We all laughed as mom passed dinner around.
After we got settled, we all sat in our seats, eating our cheesy cuisine, macaroni and cheese.
"Riley, you're awfully quiet, what's wrong?" My mom asked. I poked at my food, still concerned about Maya's reaction.
"It's nothing." I lied.
"Maya was just here, she's not here now. She left because of something, didn't she?" He asked.
"Wow. That's exactly what." I answered.
"It was about that note, wasn't it?"
I nodded.
"Part of it, something else was the reason she left, though." I answered.
My mother was following along with the conversation, and Auggie was mimicking her.
"What was on the note?" Auggie asked.
"Not important, Auggie." I answered, annoyed.
"Maya will act on it sooner or later, Riley, so whatever bothers you about this note will soon come true." My father said.
"Nothing bothers me about it. It's just that, Maya's changing, and I just... Wasn't expecting for her to change this much." I said.

After finishing my dinner I went to my room.
I went on my phone and texted Maya about a billion times before calling her.

Nothing.

I got up and sat on the bay window, thinking of the good memories with Maya.

Why does she always run?

I'm also sorry for blocking the rilaya and making Maya run away. I promise there will be more rilaya soon.
