Prologue
As he slowly but surely drew a gun out of the pocket of his coat, his eyes glinted with something that remotely resembled happiness – in a somewhat sadistic way, seeing as he was about to shoot at the two uncharacteristically terrified villains in front of him.
“Remind me why we’re freaking out here? He seems harmless!” Liana remarked, glancing at her partner in crime as the police officer prepared the gun to fire.
“No, Liana… Officer Bahl is an old enemy of mine. And trust me; there’s no point in trying to reason with him. He’ll never let us get away,” Aayush replied.
“So, we’re pretty much dead? Are you sure there’s no way to escape?”
“There’s always a way to escape. We’re jumping!” he stated, smiling at the idea, as he looked away from her and at the massive drop off the building, just inches away from where they stood. She took the opportunity of his unawareness to slip her trembling hand into his; he looked back at her and questioned, “You’re scared?”
“N-no…” she stuttered, “I’m fine.” Truth be told, she was terrified – not of the jump, nor of the height, but of what it could cause. She knew he was always prepared for any trouble that came their way, but she couldn’t help but feel that this time, they wouldn’t survive the jump… And that was what scared her so much.
“Sure you are…” he laughed – the tears in her eyes told a completely different story.
“I am!” she argued.
“Okay, ma’am.” He turned to assess the size of the army of henchmen that had assembled behind them – much to his relief, it was a much less threatening group, compared to his previous experiences. “So, shall we go?”
“Where?”
Silently, he gestured to the drop below them and she stared incredulously back at him. Her eyes widened as she shrieked, “Are you crazy?! I thought you were just kidding!”
“No, I am not crazy,” he replied, “These idiots are standing here, just waiting to kill us, and I’d much rather die at my own will than go at their hands.”
“So, you’re going to commit suicide?”
“Not just me… You will too.”
“No way!”
“Well, then, they’re waiting for you back there with a shit load of torture weapons. Come on,” he said, laughing.
She nodded, tightening her grip on his hand as they exchanged one last reassuring smile. And with that, they jumped.
