Innocence

Remember when we were children?

Remember when we used to beg and beg

when our parents whispered to each other

with unknown words

that we longed to know?

Remember when we used to think

ourselves so daring

when we said the word “dumb”?

A very bad word.

Remember when we thought

that having a boring sugar cookie

instead of a chocolate chip one

was the most devastating event?

Remember when we would think

that only bad people were mean

and only bad people would yell

and only bad people would hit.

Remember when we thought

that the world would be so much funner

if only we were grown up

and we would know everything.

Those secrets we would know.

Like they said.

“When we were older,

we would understand.”

But now we understand.

Remember when we were innocent

and the secrets were fun?

And life was one big, fun game?

Now we understand.

And life isn’t so fun anymore.
