she's trembling now
she wants to stop
but, she can't
what was the point of having a body if you couldn't control it?
she'd read a book once
about souls being their own sentient beings
able to just float about
without bodies
without walls on all four sides
without rattling, disobedient cages
"adeline, are you okay?"
he seems to ask her this a lot as of late
"i'm fine . . .
just
give me my shirt"
she tries to get up again
her body is not her only cage now,
she finds herself trapped in his arms
"no"
she tries to give him her most murderous glare
but, she can't
goddamnit, this boy had taken an icepick to her resolve and chipped away at it like a frozen floe
until it melted
"do you want my dad to see me in my bra?
i didn't know you were into that sort of thing"
she practically hisses, a distraught serpent trying to scare away a predator with dull fangs
she tries to be snarky, callous
he sees straight through it
"what's wrong?"
there's an inscrutable emotion in his eyes
god, does she hate the word inscrutable
she doesn't want to fool herself into thinking it's love
but, what if it is?
