The wind howled around Trumpkin as he trudged through the thick snow. The wind pushed and pulled him in different directions, all his energy was being used up in the fight to stay straight. The woods were not dark and dangerous as the Telmarines believed though he still did not want to get lost in this storm.
He slipped carelessly down a slope to reveal a rushing river and the steep on either side. On the other side of the river were a small cut and some stone steps leading up onto the cliff top. He sighed knowing he would have to trudge up there. Suddenly there was a snap of a twig behind him and before he even had time to turn around something brown and smelly was placed over his head the weak winter light was cut out. Trumpkin fought pulling out his dagger and waving it around in angst. He knew it was Telmarines and he knew it had been a trap. However, that was what Trumpkin thought was going on, a trap set by this young Telmarine boy with a make-believe sister to pull the heart strings but as you know there really was a sister in danger and all this was not a trap. Trumpkin just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Telmarines had caught up with Eloise and was laying in wait for her return. However, they had spotted Trumpkin and could not resist the urge to capture this strange, terrifying thing and take it back to Miraz gloating at how they had captured an old Narnian.
Now back to Eloise and her journey.
Eloise was in the process of climbing up those stone stairs when she heard the kerfuffle below. Very carefully and quietly she tied up her horse and slid down the steps to a corner where she was safely hidden but could see what was going on. She saw what she thought at first was a child but saw a flash of what she thought was a beard being kicked down by a laughing guard and another guard hitting Trumpkins head with a stone to knock him out. Eloise gasped this was her fault, she had just wanted to protect her brother but had hurt innocent people. She had to give all her will not to go down and try and save him. She saw his limp body being dragged up onto a brown horse and watched in horror as the two guards galloped away. She had to do something, get help. But what and from whom? She was alone lost in the haunted forest probably never going to see another person. Ever.
Now the guards were gone it was safe for her to return. She stepped carefully down the steps and gently crossed the river by the stepping stones. She saw that the abnormally small man had dropped a dagger in the scuffle. She picked it up brushing off the small amount of snow that had covered it slightly. She saw a sparkling Ruby and intricate patterns carved along the handle, patterns she had only seen in the old books of Narnia. Was it possible that the man had been an old Narnian? It would make sense due to his size. he could maybe be a dwarf or maybe she was seeing things and that had been a child and she had just let him be taken. She didn't know how long she had been in this forest. The trees covered the sky so greatly it could have been days and she would never have noticed. She didn't know what to do, does she carry on the way she was headed or does she try to retrace the footprints to solve the mystery. Well, either way, she went she was lost and had no idea where she was going so she decided to retrace the boy or man's footprints. She reasoned that this person had to come from somewhere so she maybe more people who helped her brother or she might find his empty home and have somewhere nice to sleep in the warmth and a chance to figure out her next move.
She raced up the stone steps to collect her horse but the horse was nowhere to be seen. She mustn't have tied it tight enough and she must have got loose. She felt like crying. She had ridden for ages and now she had to walk through the freezing snow for miles. But she composed herself, not before a few stray tears managed to trickle down her face, she knew that there was no point crying, that she just had to figure this one for herself. She went back to the spot where she had seen the person being taken. She saw that there were still some footprint half masked in the snow ad she nearly jumped fo joy, she was on her way.
