There was something about the Resistance base that was easy to love. Maybe it was the people, how kind and how brave they all were, or maybe the adventures of the missions that most would be sent on. But above all, it was the chaotic nature of the base that made it so effortless to adore.
The noise is what made Aurora Hammond settle down. It was something about always being busy, a surprise around every turn and a friend to lead you through them. She loved her missions, whether it be working on a jet or traveling across the galaxy.
There was no one she didn't enjoy being around on the base, and no one that didn't love her company. She was a joy to be around; her humour, her beauty, her stance. There was almost never a moment when she was alone, everyone working with her when they could.
But sometimes, amongst the company and loudness, she wished to be alone. She wished to be isolated by herself, somewhere quiet enough to hear her thoughts and where she didn't feel like she had to share them. And she only felt peace like that when she was with Poe Dameron.
He gave off a certain ease when he was present, his loud laugh bringing reassurance that there was a chance. His smile would make Aurora's chest loosen, her stomach tightening up as she smiled back at him. He made her feel safe, made her feel like she needed someone to stand tall even when she knows she didn't. Poe made her feel human, made her feel alive.
Best friends since a young age after Leia and Han took her in, they were inseparable on the playground and the battle field. They seemed to complement each other so well; his harsh jokes with her sweet laugh, his harmless gestures and her meaningful actions. But they were so alike, causing them to often butt heads and snap at each other.
She looked up to him, the best pilot in the Resistance and even before he had earned that title. The four years between them made him seem wiser to her, someone more powerful than she would ever have the chance to be. Poe, the stupid boy with the brightest mind, had become the orphan's closest friend and role model.
She loved him, but not like a lover. She never thought she could love him like Leia loved Han, a love she had witnessed since she was a young girl at age six. She didn't think it would ever be possible for her to love someone as much as she began to love Poe, and she began to realize how much love could hurt at the same time.
