she's not sure whether she's angry or not
until the next day
her parents have never been openly affectionate
and they haven't shared a bed in years
but, they weren't the type to engage in screaming matches either
she hadn't ever considered them getting a divorce
but, now?
she had no idea what to expect when her mother inevitably found out
having never seen them in a happy, doting relationship
she didn't know how to mourn what she had never known
she was still sad, though
more morose than anything
which is why she doesn't smile when isaac comes to her locker before lunch
he hugs her from behind,
leans around to kiss her cheek
perfect brow furrowing when he sees her downcast expression
"what's wrong?"
she should give him a penny every time he asked her that
not that he needed to be even richer
"my dad is cheating on my mom"
saying it out loud made it seem much worse than it did tucked safely inside her head
where it couldn't hurt anyone
not her, not her mother, not anyone
she shivers
skin prickling underneath her cropped tee
isaac lets go of her
there's a flurry of movement
and then, a sweatshirt in her hand
she quirks a brow, although with her lip trembling, she probably doesn't seem very intimidating
"put it on, you need it more than i do"
she stares down at it
"oh"
she puts it on, does away with her sometimes stifling pride
"i'm sorry about your parents, adeline"
she sighs into his chest
"i am too"
