The Dome was built over 500 years ago, when the Earth began to change. Our History books said that before our ancestors built the Dome, the Earth's climate had changed far too much, became too hot, too deadly, for human life. The human race was divided into two groups, those that believed they could solve the problem, and those that knew they couldn't. The latter left before it was too late, and found safe places to live, to build Domes large enough for multiple cities, along with suburbs and farmlands. When a Dome was finished, it was populated, people being placed in houses, and animals in their appropriate habitats.
The people Inside waited for the world Outside to come to an end while they sat in their homes, protected from the rising climate and subsequent natural disasters. Eventually, when the Outsiders stopped begging to be let in, they believed it did. Only members of the Arch, our government, were aloud Outside, to travel to other Domes. The rest of us were led to believe that Outside, there was nothing but death and destruction. The people Inside, though, didn't care, because they were safe, sheltered from what they were told was dangerous... but little did we know, the world we thought was safe, was setting us up to fail in the long run.
