It was just the one thing you couldn't do, to pluck up your courage to confess to your crush on Valentine's Day. So what if it was traditional for the guy to ask the girl out? You still blamed yourself for being too much of a coward.

Now, towards the end of the day, you blamed yourself for even daring to imagine confessing to him. Draco Malfoy, son of Lucius Malfoy, and devoted death eater to Lord Voldemort himself. It would certainly be harder to accept all of this if you didn't already know as your parents were deep within the Dark  Lord's clutches as well. Despite the dark cloud that covered your families, you and Draco had managed to grow a small seed of some semblance of happiness with your friendship. Ever since you were young and you found out who your family served, Draco had always been there for you. Sure, he wasn't always what most people would call the most kind-hearted, but he cared for you and was there for you when it mattered. As cold as he acted, you had no doubt in your mind that your relationship was strong, tough love though it may be. Up until now, that is.

All day you had been sneaking glances at him and trying to pass him notes in Parseltongue. All of your efforts had been wasted as he had been completely ignoring you all day. You worried that maybe something had happened with his family and He Who Must Not Be Named. What if he was given some horrible task or was being forced to become a death eater? It was a fate you both surely faced, but you had hoped that at least it might bring you closer when it happened rather than push you apart.

As the sun slowly began to set over Hogwarts, you kept your head down as you walked to your dormitory. You were a Slytherin, strong, unwavering, sharp-witted, and venomous. So why were tears now threatening to blur your view? Keeping your head down and fighting to hold your composition, the rhythmic  sound of your shoes connecting with the stone floor was suddenly joined by other sounds. You heard shuffling and raised voices, and then you saw a flash of lights reflecting off the wall from spell casting.

Turning away from the disrupted path ahead of you, you stood still as Professor Snape walked briskly up towards the scene. Scared to investigate further, you quickly made your way to another hall so you get to your room without coming in contact with whatever violence had just occurred. Collapsing onto your bed, you stared up at the ceiling.

What was I thinking? That Draco liked me? That our relationship would ever be anything more than friends? Draco Malfoy, fall in love with someone like me. I shouldn't even be thinking about these things! I am going to become a death eater soon just as he will. We are born from the darkness and that is all we can be.

"I know, right?! Draco get in a fight? I always thought he would be way too cowardly to actually engage something."

Your ears immediately perked at the sound of your dorm mates' conversation as they walked in.

"I heard he got beat up pretty badly too, had to have a rib healed."

Draco had gotten hurt? In a fight?

"Blithering idiot, he probably deserved it whatever it was. Thinks he's so great just because his family is wealthy and powerful."

You jumped up out of bed and hurriedly made your way through the halls. Before you could stop yourself you burst through the door of Draco's room and rushed in.

"Draco are you alright? I heard you got in a fi-"

You were cut short as your face was immediately engulfed in flames at the sight before you.

Draco was eyeing you with a questioning look as he held his shirt out in front of him, presumably about to put it on before you interrupted. You tried to stop your eyes from traveling his pre-bedtime hair to those beautiful collarbones to his toned chest and sculpted abs-

"Ah, ehem..."

You ripped you stare away and turned to flee, squeaking out a pathetic, "S-sorry!"

Your flight was stopped by a cool hand suddenly grasping your wrist. Your breath caught in your throat as Draco pulled you down next to him on the bed, hugging you to his bare chest in a firm embrace. Unable to move you body, you stayed perfectly still as he laid his head on your shoulder. His voice came softly next your ear in a choked hush,

"I-I'm sorry, y/n. I'm sorry for ignoring you and leaving you all alone these past few days. I've just been so afraid to tell you... those guys I got in scrabble with were right. I don't even deserve you."

Finding you voice, you slowly wrapped your arms around him and rested your hands on the back of his neck, "Draco, what are you talking about?"

His next words came reluctantly but gently in a whisper.

"I- I love you, y/n. I always have, ever since we were kids. I just never had the guts to tell you so."

Managing a reply, you spoke. You carefully lifted his face to meet your gaze as his glassy blue eyes searched yours for any response.

"Draco you don't have to blame yourself, I was scared to confess my feelings to you as well. I love you, too."

Your heart stopped momentarily in your chest as warm lips connected to the skin on your neck. He carefully trailed soft kisses up your throat before gently taking both of your wrists and pressing you down beneath him. Laying on your back, you gazed up at his glassy blue eyes as his mouth hovered above yours so closely you could feel his breath on your skin,

"Well now we don't have to let fear control us. They can't control us, or our lives unless we give into fear. And I'm not afraid."

You closed your eyes as he pressed his lips against yours. Running your hands through his hair as he deepened the kiss, your tongues danced as you took no hesitation in taking in every part of one another's slick caverns.

Breaking the kiss, you caught your breath as Draco laid his head on your chest, holding you close and inhaling your scent.

"Stay with me, tonight y/n. Please." He whispered.

"Always." You replied.

Engulfed in each other's presence, you fell asleep warm that night, untouched by the cold cruelty of the outside darkness.
