When Demetria went to school the next day she was really tired. Nicki had tried to get her to stay home but Demi wasn’t one to be cooped up all day when she had really important things she wanted to get done.

Demetria got to her locker where her friend Jasmine was waiting. “Demi, OMG I have to tell about this guy I met at the mall!”

 “Yeah,” Demi said sleepily.

 “Demi, are you alright?”

 “Yeah, yeah’” Demetria yawned.

“Did you get any sleep last night? Obviously you didn’t or else you wouldn’t be tired. Why didn’t you get to sleep last night?” The girl just stared at her friend with a huge goofy grin on her face.

Getting annoyed, Jasmine begged her friend to tell her why she was running on such lack of sleep. Just as she was about to answer her friend Demetria fell. Jaz caught Demi before she could hit the floor. When she was sure she was holding her friend in a way that they both wouldn’t fall Jasmine saw that her friend was snoring quietly.

“I’m taking you to the nurse’s office. You need a long nap.” With that and no help from people staring in the hallway even if she shouted for them to help, Jaz took Demi, to the nurse’s office.

When Demetria woke up she was confused. The room was white and her room in Nicki’s apartment was painted sea blue. She sat up in the bed which was quite uncomfortable. A nurse walked by and noticed that Demi was awake.

“Oh good, how do you feel.”

“Kinda refreshed actually. Why, was something wrong?”

“You fell asleep in the hallway. What were you doing last night?”

“Oh, I got some exciting news yesterday and I guess it got the best of me.” The nurse told Demi that since she was refreshed and awake that she should head to class before she missed any more of the school day. She also told the girl not to get too excited next time she got good news.

Demetria ran to her 5th period class. Music. She was ten minutes late and out of all her classes she being late for music. After that the rest of her day went pretty normal as usual.

After school, Demi heard someone shout her name as she was packing up her homework. “Hey Jaz. What’s up?” Jasmine wanted to finish the conversation they had been having before Demetria had passed out.

Demetria explained that the lack of sleep was because she was going to be able to have her sweet sixteen with her friends after all. Jasmine jumped up and down with excitement and joy because she new how bad Demetria had wanted to have this party. She knew that for Demetria, it was an escape from her parents and all the fights they had been having.

Just then Shawna and Jay came over. “What’s got Jazzy so bubbly,” Jay asked Demetria. And so the adopted girl explained the story over. Once he heard the story, Jay thought that they should celebrate this good news with some ice cream. Everyone agreed since ice cream had always been –for some strange reason- the celebratory snack for whenever something amazing happened to one of us –which was quite often.

The group went to the closest ice cream shop from the school and once they were all comfortably seated in a booth with their ice creams Jaz, Jay and Shawna shortly interrogated Demi about the plans for the party.

“When is it?

“Where is it?”

 “What time?”

“I don’t know guys. Nicki is making all the arrangements but the invitations should be ready for tomorrow.” With that they ate the rest of their ice cream in silence.

When they finished they all went their separate ways. Demi walked home since she knew if she didn’t, she would have a sugar high and she needed to burn it off now or else she be really annoying to whoever was in the vicinity when the high hit.

When Demetria got home she saw Nicki lying on the couch watching Judge Judy. “You’re seriously into that?” She jumped a little; she obviously hadn’t heard Demetria come in. She sat up before responding to the girl’s question.

“It helps me relax when I watch Judge Judy.”

“Everyone has they’re way of dealing with things I guess… So who’s the entertainment for the party?”

“You have to wait and find out like everyone else. But the invitations are done. They are on the kitchen table.”

Demetria gave up trying to figure out who was going to be singing at the party before she had even started guessing because she knew she wouldn’t get an answer out of Nicki. Instead she went to go see what the invitations looked like.

The girl walked into the kitchen and saw a box on the counter that said 100 on it. She opened it and saw that it held one hundred invitations for the party that Nicki had planned. 100? How many friends did Nicki think Demetria had? But then again she had invited twenty-five people originally because she couldn’t invite everyone she wanted –even if they weren’t actually friends- because of costs. But it seemed that Nicki was a rich chick. So she didn’t complain about the number of invites in the box.
